NEW YORK, April 24 —The retail food sales in April are running ahead of the same month a year ago despite the late spring and the decline in industrial activity, the American Institute of Food Distri- bution reported today. In the industrial centers of the East, Middle West and South, the institute stated, supermarkets are making rapid progress and aggres- sive retailers are showing sales in- creases of 20 per cent or more. Small neighborhood stores, however, arg running behind last year. In rural communities, which serve about 40 per cent of the population. retail food sales are greater than last year, especially in the South where grocery stores are doing a big business as a result of higher prices for freih produce.
