Clark, president, told the Colum- bia Historical Society last night at a meeting in the Mayflower Hotel. Mr. Clark, who related high lights and anecdotes from the life of the famous bandmaster and composer, mentioned an occasion when the youtnful Sousa was called upon to entertain inmates of the Govern- ment Hospital for the Insane. John Philip, Mr. Clark relates, was dragged from the pitcher’s mound during a baseball game in Southeast Washington. He didn't want to play at the hospital and offered the excuse that he had no clean shirt. His father, however, made him wear one of his shirts, with a collar many times too large. The boy had not finished the in- troduction to his violin solo when the collar button came unfastened |and the collar began to climb up | the back of his head. Sousa forgot | his notes and began to improvise. His accompanist became confused and angry. Finally, the combina- | tion of circumstances proved too much, and young Sousa fled from the platform in utter dismay. Enlisted in His Teens. Much of Mr. Clark’s talk was de- voted to the story of Sousa’s boy- hood. He was born in Washington’s Southeast Italian colony near the THE EVENING STAR, Navy Yard, Mr. Clark related, and while in his teens enlisted in the Marine Band. . “He blew with vigor,” Mr. Clark stated, “and the neighbors com- plained that he was depreciating real estate.” Mr. Clark told of Sousa’s meet- ing with his tuture wife in Phila- delphia in '1879. “She was quite the loveliest little girl I had ever seen,” he quoted the musician as saying. Then 16 years old, she married So&sa the following year, Mr. Clark s Signed Up for War, Mr. Clark spoke of Sousa’s rise to fame, his triumphal tours of Europe and most of the world. During the World War, he said, the musician served with the Navy and did “yeo- man” service, particularly in the drives for the Liberty loan. Sousa lived in the Southeast sec- tion of Washington until his resigna- tion from the Marine Band in 1892, Mr. Clark said. Then he lived in New York City. His death in 1932 occasioned these words by Capt. Taylor Branson, the present leader of the band: “The March King is dead.” Members of the society were en- tertained with songs by the quar- tet of St. Paul’'s Church, Rock Creek Parish.
