Ghost of Suicide Annie Returns To Die Anew for Lover on Barge By the Associated Press. NEWARK, N. J, Oct. 30.—All of 80 years have passed since sweet Annie Crest sank beneath the cool, green waters of the old Morris Canal, but they say she still comes back on the eve of All Saints Day to die anew for the only man she ever loved. And when the moon is full and round in the bright Heavens and a man has the clear eye of innocence, he can still see the spectral maiden end her phantom barge move over the dark waters and see her die her painless death, Annie, who chose the grave of a suicide. The man's name was Abner—Ab- ner Lovelace or Levely-or Lovell, de- pending on who tells the story—and he was a fine youth when he met sweet Annie. . Tom Crest was her father, a giant of & man with a beard, owner and captain of the barge Eva. Annie was born on the boat as it lay near the Halsey street docks on a fair morning in June, and although she had timely notice, the midwife was slow in getting to the place and Annie was already there when she came over the side. But Annie’s mother had died. Knew No Other Home. The girl knew no other home, save the barge, for business was-thriving on the canal and Capt. Tom had no days to spend ashore to make another home for her. To be sure there was‘old Bridget, saved from destitution and despair by Capt. Tom, and Bridget was the one who brought Annie through early childhood. And when Bridget died they gave her a fine wake and a decent Chris- tian burial, and that was when Annie was 9 and of an age when she was doing the cooking and the washing on the barge, growing ever more lovely. At 11 she was handling the rudder as well as any man, and Capt. Tom went on drinking his apple brandy, with Annie in full command, as the barge was lifted higher and higher, through the locks, and as it moved peacefully across the New Jer- sey countryside. That was of an August morning at Bloom- field, and the dark waters of the canal were like burnished gold as the sun came up. She was swimming, naked, undet the stern of the barge, when on Jook- ing up she saw the youth on a black horse. His lips were parted and he could utter no word. She commanded him to leave, and he wheeled his horse and retreated until she had dressed. When he re- turned she asked him who he was. He told her, and she gave him her own name. Capt. Tom came back that morning, weary and sick, from the Mallow Tav- ern, and met the youth. He found in him nothing to offend. And then, on a day in November, Abner went to his father and told him he wanted to marry Annie Crest. “And who is Annie Crest,” asked his father. “She is the daughter of Tom Crest, the canal boat captain,” Abner re- plied. “Then she is no good. Kann Sons Company, Pennsylvania Avenue, 7th, 8th and D Streets N.W., boat women are no good,” the father said. “That’s a lie,” Abner cried, “and I mean to marry her.” Hired Five Ruffians. His father laughed. He went to New York to the old Five Points sec- tion, that hurly-burly neighborhood of desperadoes and poverty, wretched- ness and filth, and hired five ruffians to kidnap his son. When they came upon the lad and tried to seize him, he fought desper- ately. One man was hurt, and in a rage he drew a knife and plunged it irto Abner. The youth died. Annie heard the news and her face became white, but she said nothing. She was silent all the days of the long journey across the State to Phillips- burg. And all the way back she kept her own counsel. And then, as the boat came down the canal and while her father slept, she leaped into the waters, not more than a mile from the spot where she was born. The canal is gone now. A boulevard stands there, but they say that Annie still comes back te die anew each year. “Hate” was once used for “a bit," as “There's not a hate of truth in it.” Gaily Colored Chrishfias Cards Imprinted With Your Name! asd * 1226 (f .
