FINANCIAL. RAIL FUEL COSTS AND MATERIALS RISE Year's Expenses Expected to Climb 25 Per Cent Above Levels Prevailing in May, 1933. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, August 7.—Rallroads will pay 25 per cent and materials this year than in May, | 1933. f This expansion, a measure of higher | €osts of materials and fuels, will add | gome $225.455.000 to railway costs over those paid four yeas ago, an esti- mate by the Bureau of Railway Eco- | nomics disclosed. Material costs on which the study was based were calculated from unit | prices of 70 items of material re- ported to the bureau by 18 railwa systems which use about two-thirds | of the material purchased by the class 1 railroads. A high spot of the present study was that “more than half of the gen- eral increase in prices of railway ma- terial since 1933 took place sm(e‘ June, 1936, and that over half of lhA( increase occurred since last October.” The rise of 37 per cent in coal cost over May. 1933, has meant an addi- | tional outlay of $47,365,000 more than | 1933.
