T G=2 FINANCIAL. THE SUNDAY 'STAR, WASHINGTON D._C, AUGUST 8, 1937—PART FIVE. . FINANCIAL. _————————————————-———h——-—l_—______——_“__—fi RAILEQIERENT. b entine Dicerdes WEEKLY SUMMARY OF THE NEW YORK STOCK EXCHANGE WEEK ENDING SATURDAY, AUGUST 7, 1937. OUTLOOK BRIGHT Recent Sharp Gains Represent Only Small Fraction of Peak Recovery Levels. Bpecial Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, August 7.—The recent sharp upturn in the earnings of rail- road equipment manufacturers repre- sents no more than a small fraction of " what might reasonably be considered . peak recovery levels for the industry, ! according to & survey issued by Fen- ner & Beane. Current operations of equipment manufacturers, the survey states, are being supported mainly by heavy un- filled orders, placed in the latter part of 1936 and the first quarter of 1937. The current lull in new orders is not an occasion for misgivings, Fen- ner & Beane assert, since the railroads usually concentrate their orders in the Spring and Fall, and the recent de- cline is only of normal seasonal pro- portions. With traffic at the October peak ex- pected to total nearly 100,000 more cars than in the peak weeks of 1936, the carrying capacity of the roads is now at an irreducible minimum, ac- eording to this analy: The survey estim: that orders for the full year 1937 may total 30 per cent in excess of the 68,341 freight cars and 556 locomotives ordered in 1936, Wages in the industry are estimated to be 15 per cent higher and raw ma- terials 25 per cent higher than a year 820; Tecent price increases, averaging about 20 per cent, both for freight cars and locomotives and parts, are believed to have largely offset these added gosts. DETROIT, August 7.—The Pontiac division of General Motors Corp. an- nounced today prices on all its models will be increased by $45, effective Mon- day, August 9. With this announcement, all General Motors have announced increases in prices of their automobiles. Commodity Price Changes for Week BY A A PATTON, Associated Press Statistician. NEW YORK, August 7.—Prices of farm staples continued in divergent paths this week, live stock rising to a new peak for the recovery swing, while agricultural items sank to a new low for the year. Commodity prices generally were lower during the period, recording the fourth consecutive setback. The Associated Press weighted in- dex of 35 important wholesale staples dipped to 89.95 per cent of the 1926 average from 90.15 last week and com- pared with 80.06 a year ago. The current level is slightly above the year's low point touched in mid- June Live stock quotations were bolstered by strong consumer demand and the fact shipment of animals from farm to market continued light as & result of unusually heavy movement last Winter and this Spring. Hogs and cattle both advanced, while lamb fell back. ‘Wheat Off arply. A sharp break in wheat outweighed minor gains in cotton, corn and rye among agricultural commodities. Es- timates of wheat output this year in- dicated a bigger harvest than some traders had expected. After several months of quiet, met- als turned up under the leadership of lead. Tin and zinc shared in the betterment, antimony slipping frac- tionally. Strength in the group was attributed to the unabated appetite of industry for these raw materials, Wholesale food prices fell back, with eggs, flour, coffee and lard all reced- ing. Cocoa stood against the tide, pushing ahead slightly. Textiles were mixed. in wool was offset An advance lower cotton The latter reflected favorably promise for a large produc- tion of raw cotton. Rubber Advances. Among industrial staples, rubber moved up, and turpentine reacted. The improvement in rubber stemmed from reports of scantier supplies, commodity men said. The index, with its components, based on 1926 as 100, compared as follows: August Previous Year I3 K 135 commodities Industrial Food Live stock - __ Agriculture 7 Textile Non-fer. metal #New 1927 high, iNew 1937 low.
