SETTLEMENT UNITS PROVIDE “CAMPS” Children Unable to Leave Town Afforded Healthful Recreation. Settlement house leaders affiliated with the Community Chest are pro- viding healthful recreation for under- privileged children unable to attend one of Washington's 18 free or low- cost camps. Children of the Christ Child Set- tlement neighborhood are afforded a Summer program which includes games at the Carberry Playground, treasure hunts in Pctomac Park and, on very hot days, handicraft work in the cool club rooms of the settle- ment. The Barney Neighborhood House has an outdoor theater where chil- dren are making costumes and re- hearsing for a presentation of “The d Nightingale and the Rose” on Au- gust 13. Colored children of the Southwest Settlement are using the Bell School for art work, sewing, woodwork and other crafts, while younger children attend nursery school. The children will present a play at the close of the Summer classes. Games, radio programs and a nurs- ery school occupy the time of children of the Northwest Settlement, who live more than a mile from the near- est playground. The nursery young- sters get & wholesome meal, fol- lowed by & nap, as part of the pro- gram. The Georgetown Children's House supervises a camp near Pickett Run, where older boys are making rustic furniture and building & swimming pool. Boys at St. Joseph's Home have pitched tents back of the home. They have a swimming pool in their own front yard.
