June 30, against $2,562,182,000 six months ago and $2,356,357,000 a year ago. Deposits were $2,136,387,000, against $2,286,209,000, respectively. Loans and discounts on June 30 were $809,978,000, an increase of $38,000,000 over the figure on December 31 last and a gain of $160,000,000 over last year at this time. National City Bank, second largest bank in the country, is a “two-billion” dollar bank again from the standpoint of resources, its midyear statement showed. Resources on June 30 aggre- gated over two billions since 1929 when they totaled $2,206,241,000. Six | months ago resources were $1,904,- 799,797. Deposits on June 30 were $1,807,822,047. NEW YORK, July 7.—First reports from chain stores today reported sube stantial dollar gains in June sales, compared with last year, though a part of the increase was attributed to higher retail prices, Sales of P. W. Woolworth Co. in June totaled $24,236991, a gain of 3.6 per cent over a year ago and the largest June sales on record. Previous high for the month was $23.609,078 in 1929. Woolworth sales for the first Cattle and Hog Prices Climb to Peaks at Chicago By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, July 7.—Live stock feed- ers today obtained record-breaking high prices for cattle and hogs. Buyers paid tops of $16.65 per hun- dredweight for cattle and $12.75 for hogs This peak in cattle surpassed all highs since early in 1930 and was 35 cents above the previous 1937 top touched in April. The hog top equaled yesterday's high mark, which was above all pre- | vious peaks here since 1928. Today's top was paid, however, on a declin- ing market for some classes of swine. High prices also were being paid for sheep. BOSTON July 7 (# (United States De- partment of "Azriculture).—Domestic wool auotations were firm today though trade was extremely limited. ~ Fine Ohio Dela was quoted 40 to 42 cents in the grease and scattered small [ots were sold through Boston houses ai prices within this range. Western grown wools were mostly quiet. but firmly quoted. Mill buyers showed little interest and the occasional inguiries were for wool that could be bought in the coun- try. June sales of McLellan Stores, variety chain, totaled $1.820.972, a gain of 1.3 per cent over the like 1936 month. Sales for the first five months at $8.342,067 were 89 per cent above the like period of last year. Jewel Tea Co., grocery distributars, reported sales of $1,739.029 for the four weeks ended June 19, a rise of 14.8 per cent over the like 1936 period. For the 24 weeks ended June 19 sales amounted to $10,543,712, a gain of 15.9 per cent over a year ago. H. L. Green Co., variety chain, ree ported sales totaling $2,804,531, a gain of 6.9 per cent over June, 1936, Sales for the first five 1937 months, at $12,- 877,860, ran 11.3 per cent above the like 1936 period. The Middle West and Eastern varis ety chain of Neisner Bros, Inc, ree ported June sales aggregating $2,064,= 050, a gain of 6.3 per cent over last year. Sales for the first six months were $9,934,799, an increase of 7 per cent over 1936. McKesson & Robbins, wholesalers and manufacturers of drug products, reported sales totaling $13,503.872 for May, a rise of 19.3 per cent over May, 1936.
