Erecial Dispatch to The Btar. NEW YORK, July 7.—It is pgssible that the prospective increase in the normal demand for automobiles this year will be modified by a rise in the year's average price for motor cars, says the Alexander Hamilton Institute. There is talk at the present time of a 10 per cent price advance. On the basis of present costs, it is apparent that higher prices are needed. Workers in the automobile factories are now receiving an average wage of about 86 cents per hour. This com- pares with 76 cents a year ago and with an annual average of 60 cents at the low of the depression in 1933. As compared with the pre-depression wage of 75 cents in 1929, the present figure is 14.6 per cent higher. This represents a real increase in labor costs, since the output per man-hour is certainly no higher now than in 1929 and is possibly lower, as some evidence indicates. In addition to higher labor costs, there has been a sharp increase in the price of raw materials. The aver- age price of steel, for example, is now 2,605 cents per pound, according to the compilation by the Iron Age. This compares with 2.097 cents a year ago and with the annual average of 2.297 cents in 1929. The present price of steel is thus 13.4 per cent above the pre-depression lavel. Since automobile prices at the pres- ent time average about 15 per cent below the 1929 level, it is evident that they are underpriced. Economies in other directions can hardly make up now for the present high cost of labor and raw materials relative to automo- bile prices.
