XY A—18 FIN: ESTIMATES GIVEN ONTRANSIT RATES Many Passengers Would Be Unaffected by Boosts Now Proposed. BY EDWARD C. STONE. i More than 100,000,000 revenue pas- | zengers out of the 156,000,000 carried vearly on the cars and busses of the Capital Transit Co. will not be affected by the increase in fares now proposed by the company, it was disclosed today. The Capital Transit Co. has just completed an estimate of the number ofsrevenue passengers who would be affected by the proposed rate in- crease, the survey covering 12 months and being based on the passenger traffic records in the first three months of 1937 The estimate states 100.850.815 rev- enue passengers would not have to pay ANV more money in car or bus fares than they do now. This number in- cludes 76.217.89 pass riders who pay £1.25 for their weekly tickets and | would continue to pay $1.25 under | the proposed advance in fares | It is also interesting to note that | under the proposed plan of increasing | tokens from 4 for 30 cents to 4 for 25 cents, 4.321.956 revenue passengers would enjoy a decrease in their car | fares. These passengers are now pay- | ing 10-cent straight fares. They live along lines which do not permit the use of tokens The proposed advance in fares would mean an increase in street car and transportation costs to 51,036,500 | vearly riders, according to the Capital | Transit survey, including 40457124 reve passengers who do not pur- chase weekly passes. but always buy tokens. To them the proposed increase | In fares means payment of 35 cents for every four tokens they purchase Ktead of the present 30 cents for tokens Hizh Costs Halt Dividends. In the last few years the Capital | Transit Co. might have paid $6.50 per share in dividends on the stock. | ! had it not been for the steady m—i crease in wages and taxation costs, President E. D. Merrill said today At the time of the merger, Decem ber 1, 1933, two-man car operators and bus operators received 51 cents | per hour and one-man car operators | 56 cents. At the present time two- man car operators are paid 67 cents per hour and one-man car and bus | operators are paid 74 cenfs, Two-man trainmen received an increase of 4 cents hourly in March, 1934 10 cents by arbitration. effective April, 1935, and 2 cents by agreement in April 1037 Bus | in- | four of 4 cents in operators had increases cents in March, 1934; 16 April, 1935, and 3 cents in April, 1937. | One-man car operators were increased 4 cents in March, 1934; 11 cents in April. 1935, and 3 cents in April, 1937 At the same tme these employes' | wages were increased other em- plaves were substantially advanced The total cost of these wage increases | to employes from December 1, 1933, | to the present time is over $1.225000 nnually, President Merrill said In addition to the increase in wages, materials and taxes have materially advanced. Excluding Federal income taxes, the taxes of the merged com- | pany in December, 1933, amounted to | £35.390, or at the rate of about $425.- | 00 per year | For the first months of 1937, taxes exclusive of income taxes were | 5250489, or at the rate of $751,000 per | vear. This increase in taxes amounts to $326.000 annually, of which ap- proximately $200,000 represents !axr\si imposed by the social security and un- employment compensation legislation, The aggregate increase in wages and taxation compared with the year | 1933 is $1.551.000 per annum This 1< equivalent to an annual dividend of 6'; per cent. or $6.50 per share of stock Regarding div future, Preside four iend payments in the Merrill said he could not venture a statement Dividend action will depend on the rate of fa allowed. cost of operation and whether | the directors see fit to turn the earn- ings into mew equipment or make dividend payments. These are mat- ters that cannot be forecast. Earn- tngs, however, should be better this | vyear than last, with the heavy ex- | penses of irack changes out of the | way and some economies made by | rerouting of certain street cars. he | said 6.000 Ignore Dividend Checks.
