By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, June 4 —The wide- spread influence of the strike situation was felt in some trade branches this week, Dun & Bradstreet said today in their weekly review. | However, the losses incurred due to the tenseness in labor were offset in some lines by the approach of warmer weather and the closing of the school | semester. FRIDAY, “Sales of Summer apparel | momentum vigorously.” the summary stated, “led by women's dresses, mil- linery, handbags, accessories and men's gabardine and tropical suits. | “Polo shirts, slacks, sport shoes and | straw hats all rose with the tempera- ture.” | ®ained | Leading centers, excepting the strike areas where advances were curtailed, | averaged 3 to 6 per cent above last | week. Taking the country as a whole | the increase over the 1938 comparative | | was 8 to 18 per cent | Increases at ! 1936 were: New England, 8 to 15 per cent: East, 7 to 20: Middle West, 10 to 18 Northwest, 16 to 22: South, 18 to 30: Southwest. 12 fo 18, and Pacific | Coast, 12 to 20 “New life imparted to the prin- | cipal wholesale markels this week, as the passing of Memorial day marked the inauguration of the Summer re- tail season,” the review said. “With gains in orders for some of the hard- ware, electrical and building material lines running as high as 50 per cent, | wholesale volume was estimated at 18 to 30 per cent than the cor- responding 1936 The agency reported holiday shut- downs and labor uprisings had dis- rupted production schedules, with the rate slower in many industrial divi- sions.
