BY the Associated Press. BT. LOUIS, May 8—Kings and queens of aviation—and some of the Jokers, the stunt men who fool death—have filed entries for St. Louis’ air races to be held May 29-31 in celebration of the tenth anniver- sagy of Col. Charles A Lindbergh's New York-to-Paris flight, Staging America’s first interna- tlonal serobatic contest, the air show will bring together eight daredevils to provide spectators with flying’s wide aasortment of thrills and chills. With entrance in the event by invitation only, four acceptances already have *_been received by James Ewing Rowan, managing director of the races. These competitors are Lieut. Joe Mackey of Findlay, Ohio, the United Btates’ official representative at the tnternational air games at Paris last May; the veteran Tex Rankin of Los Angeles, movie stunt man; Paul Mants, Amelia Earhart's technical adviser, and Capt. Leonard Povey, ehief instructor of the Cuban air force, who may be accompanied here by Col. Fulgencia Batista, Cuba’s “iron man.” Roscoe Turner, veteran king of the airways, and Mrs. Louise Thaden, winner of the 1936 Harmon and Bendix Trophies, head the list of speed fiyers entered so far in the races for which total prizes of $15,500 will be awarded. Maj. Alexander de Seversky, Rus- sian World War ace; Roger Don Rae of Lansing, Mich, 1936 racing champion; Art Chester, Los Angeles; 8. J. Wittman, Oshkosh, Wis.; Rudy Kling, Lemont, Ill.; Marion McKeen, Los Angeles, and Harold Neuman, Kanses City, are among the other air “speed merchants” who will as- sault records for distances from 100 kilometers to 50 miles. “Horse race” starts, in which the planes take off simultaneously, will be used for each Tace. g Dr. Belaunde to Speak. Staft Correspondent of The Star. CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., May 8. —Discovery of an “activator” of the male hormone which increases its po- tency sixfold was-.announced before the Virginia Academy of Sciences here today by Dr. Maximilian Ehren- stein of the University of Virginia Medicel School. Dr. Ehrenstein described this sub- stance as a “sodium salt of palmitic acid.” Palmitic acid—found in palms, from which it derives its name—is also one of the most abundant acids in the fats of the animal body. The Virginia physiologist hit upon his discovery largely by accident. He has been engaged for some years in an effort to extract from the adrenal glands of cattle pure “cortin,” the secretion of the adrenal cortex which is necessary for life and which acts as a magical drug in increasing physical endurance. This required fractionization after fractionization of cortical preparations, each presum- ably coming a little closer to the fraction which contained the pure substance. Residue Thrown off. There was gradually thrown off a residue which produced none of the reactions of cortin and hence could contain none of the material sought. Chemically, this residue was an extremely complex mixture of or- ganic acid salts for which no place could be assigned in the physiological mechanism. Dr. Ehrenstein had also been work- ing on the chemistry of the male hormone testosterone, first isolated about three years ago and since then successfully synthesized in the lab- oratory. This drug already is find- ing its way into medical practice as the most notable of all rejuvenators. Its effects are produced by injection of extremely minute amounts. Early in their experimental work | with testosterone, however, European 714 13th St. N.W. of Science. investigators found that its stimula- tion of the accessory male characters, such as the combs of roosters, was doubled if there was injected at the same time and the same spot & minute amount of an ester, or etherized frac- tion, of some one of the fatty acids. Palmitic acid was one of these, but it did not work so well as propionate acid, a derivative of body fats be- longing in the same group. The testosterone now used in medioal practise is & mixture of the synthe- sized hormone itself and propionate acid. The mechanism of the in- creased potency can only be sur- mised at present. Finds Effectiveness Tripled. Theorizing as to this cause, and impressed with the possible parallel to known mechanisms of the effec- tiveness of some of the female hor- mones, Dr. Ehrenstein suspected that the adrenal residue might contain the substance in the body itself for which the acid esters serve as a sub- stitute in the synthetic preparation. He tried out this residue on rats and found that, measured by the standard tests, the efficacy of tes- tosterone was approximately tripled. The next step was to find what part of the residue was producing the effect. In only two parts of the body, Dr. Ehrenstein says, are the fatty acids found in a free state— | the adrenal glands and the male sex glands. In these two places they are able to enter easily into com- binations of sodium on & one-to-one basis—one molecule of the acid to one molecule of salt. He tested with his rats various pre] patrons at " “on “L" Street side of se. opposite Thomson Pub- Psychometry Delineations Daily Hours: 11 AM. te 9 P.M. Grace Gray De Long. The “Lost Word™ in Refrigeration arations made up in this way. The propionate acid- salt was effective, but considerably inferior to the pal- mitic acid salt which pushed up the physiological efMcacy of testosterone between five and six fold. It appar- ently is quite close to the material which nature herself has provided in the body for the same purpose—either in the adrenals or the sex glands. Binder for Hormone. ‘The probable explanations of the effect, Dr. Ehrenstein sald, is that the body can utilire at one time only incredible minute amounts of the sex hormone. Almost any dosage is too great to be taken care of at the mo- NSNS ment. The body uses what it can and excretes the rest as waste. : The palmitic acid salt serves as a binder for the hormone, releasing it over a considerable period only in such minute doses as the system can make use of. It serves as the system’s testosterone storehouse. The result is that the body gets the full effect of whatever dosage of the hormone is given, instead of wasting the greater part of it. There are now three known male hormones in nature, tnediscovery of one being announced L2fore the Amer- ican Chemical Society only two weeks ago. There are also a half dozen 1937. PART ONE. or more synthetic preparations which are being tested. Each of the three natural ones has a slightly different effect on different organs. Although he has not subjected the conclusion to tests, Dr. Ehrenstein said, it is highly improbable that the palmitic acid salt would produce the same ef- fects with the other two. He ized that his results still are very much in the experimental stage, and that it will be a long time before they can have any medical ap- plication. His conclusions are based on findings With rats and at certain specific dosages. He is by no means certain that the results would be duplicated with other dosages. ‘The actusl spplications of testos- terone are still highly debatable, he astressed. A theory has been advanced with some plausibility, he explained, that in both sexes there is a critical balance of both male and female hormones and when this balance is disturbed various apprently uncon- nected disfunctions take place ertirely aside from premature aging. In such cases administration of the vastly strengthened testosterone preparation | might have far-reaching value—in case further tests bear out the pre- liminary findings. There also is somg reason to believe, physiologists attending the session pointed out, that in each sex some of the specific hormones of the opposite #ex have the function of toning up the entire system instead of the specifie effects which they produce in their own sex, Bargains in Wedding Rings: An_assortment of di \\”//// weading Tings at $1830 3 7 These are worth sneeing.
