RESORTS. Biggest National Play ground Is Land of Varied Vacations Jasper Park, in Heart of Canadian Rockies, Offers a Bit of Fashion, Infor- mality and Diversified Activities. JASPER PARK LODGE, May 8— Jasper National Park, Alberta, plumb in the middle of the Canadian Rockies, is not only the largest national play- ground in the world, but it is also a solution of many a travel agent’s di- lemma. When it comes to a discussion of where to go, what to see and what to do on a Summer vacation there is sel- dom any common denominator which will divide evenly into the varied ideas which the average family holds on the subject. Travel agents know that the usual wife wants in her vacation & bit of fashion with a few kindred souls around the place with whom she can knit or gossip or play cards— or all of them—some comfortable roads over which she can roll in a well- groomed car. Her husband prefers perhaps to be comfortable in a soft shirt at dinner time; to enjoy & bit of golf and to flick a trout fly with the full knowledge that some unsuspecting fish is going to snap at it. Youngsters List Their Wants. The young folks may agree with mother as far as the dash of fashion goes and with father to the extent of finding some pleasure in a round or two of golf and a day on the trout stream. But very definitely they want | more than that, Something to do in the daytime that has snap and verve to it and, at night, a good band to dance to or a camp fire to sit around while some imaginative native spins heir-raising and quite unbelievable yarns. ‘The problem of where to go, often winds up in the tourist agent’s lap. He is then supposed to act the role of & father confessor, peacemaker and Judge advocate, And he has had many a lucky day by thinking of Jasper. The park is on the western boundary ©f sunny Alberta. It was estblished 8s & park by the Canadian Governent in 1907. Its 4400 square miles, em- braces the largest national playground and game reservation in the world, They named it after Jasper Hawes, ‘who away back in 1800 had wandered into that section of the country and founded a fur post for the then power- ful Northwest Trading Company. Here, in 1922, Jasper Park Lodge, one of the world’s outstanding Sum- mer resorts, was built. And when that happened, it solved many a vacation problem. Fashion Without Fuss. ‘The lodge has its bit of fashion. But it is not a fussy place. It is con- structed on the bungalow plan, having & large number of bungalows of differ- ent sizes and shapes, radiating through Pieasant grounds from a central build- ing. These cabins contain bed rooms, & sltting room and each has a wide RESORTS. r CANADA NI veranda, but the central building or main lodge is the center of all social activities, In addition to the dining room, this building has a huge lounge in the center of which there is a double- faced log-burning open fireplace. The lounge is tastefully and comfortably furnished and there is always a place to sit down. It is the kind of a room in which people can feel at home to knit, to play cards or to chat. And parents can keep a watchful but not too apparent an eye upon the young folks on the dance floor of the ball room just off the Jounge. Along the Whole front of the main lodge there is & wide verande from which is to be had a fine view of the open-air heated Sswimming pool; Lac Beauvert, one of the most beautiful lakes in the Cana- dian Rockies; the snow-tipped crown of Mount Edith Cavell and the blue slopes of the Whistler range of mountains. The veranda is a dandy place for knitting. For her motor drives there is a wide range of routes to choose from. The car can go right up to the foot of the glacler on Mount Edith Cavell which is about 2,000 feet higher than the lodge. It can roll merrily up the hill in the opposite direction to Maligne Canyon where the earth opened its mouth in a yawn and swallowed a river. It can speed along beside the milky green waters of the Athabaska River to Pocahontas where will be found a series of hot springs used in treatment of sciatica. And on this drive will be seen lots of game such as deer, moose, black bear and mountain aheep. There is a fine highway away up the Athabacka River to where it suddenly tumbles off a mountainside in the form of a splendid cataract known es Athabaska Falls. Still another drive goes to a lake at the foot of Pyramid Mountain, a peak that is as shot with colors as watered silk. Prefers Informal Dress. Jasper is a homey sort of place and while it accepts men who like to—or do—doll up in a boiled shirt for dinner, it doesn’t encourage that sort of thing. It much prefers the informal person who wants to wear & soft shirt, and as long as he wears 8 tie and a coat with it he can be sure of being in style. For his goM, Dad has to walk less than 100 yards from the main lodge to reach the first tee of an 18-hole golf course which ranks among the first 10 golf courses of the world. It will probably encourage the player to know that if he doesn’t break par on the course, neither has anybody else and some of the most expert golfers have tried. For his fishing, the angler has only to go to Maligne Lake or the Ton- RESORTS. i \r \VAGATION THE SUNDAY STAR, WASHINGTON, D. €., MAY 9 quin Valley and if he can’t catch a full mess of trout in either place he had better give up fishing. Maligne Lake is a perfect speckled trout area and many a fisherman says the streams and lakes of the Tonquin Valley can't be heaten for rainbow trout. And there’s s heap of grand scenery at both places to boot. The young folks’ problem at Jasper 1sn't to find something to do but how to find the time to do all that can be done. For them, there is tennis, golf, swimming, boating and dancing at the lodge, fishing with Dad, or motoring with Mother. But there are Jots of other things as well, typical young folk stuff. Yodeling Guides in Mountains. Suppose, for instance, the youths want to climb a mountain. There | are always yodeling Swiss guides within hailing distance and as for mountains—well, all one has to do is point a finger in the air, squint along i, and the chances are ten to one that the finger tip will be aimed square at some peak that nobody has ever climbed. This mountain climbing is a sort of breath-taking business but the young folks seem to like it and if they want it, Jasper's the place to get it. But it's on the trail that the young folks have the real fun. There are cowboy guides and broad-backed, sure-footed mountain ponies, It doesn't matter if they can’'t ride. They'll stay on somehow and if they don't the guide will hoist them up again. As for trails, they go wandering all over the map, in a sort of crazy quilt fashion, like the streets of Boston, but they take you places, They clamber up the sides of the mountains to the edge of snow fields, where the chances are good of finding big patches of | the bluest forget-me-nots growing. They'll amble through the shadiest, coolest sort of woods and curl along the shores of lakes that vary in color from deepest jade to amethyst. They roam through alpland meadows, Where marmots whistle a cheery wel- come and startled ptarmigan rise on Whirring wings out of the deep heather in®o the blue sky. They slip down into deep valleys to roll merrily along for a way with a gurgling, emerald brook. Campfire Climax. And at the end of the day there is always a fine campsite where tents or tepees are pitched; where a pine log fire, scented with juniper boughs, burns, and where the stars hang so low that it seems it is only necessary to lift up a hand to pluck the Big Dip- per out of the sky. And the tales | those cowboy guides can spin are something to marvel at. If it's hiking instead of riding the young folks prefer, that sort of thing cabins are located every 8 or 10 miles, so that a comfortable walking tour of four or flve days can easily be :mapped out. If it is camera studies, | motion or still, that interest the young | folks, there are few better places to click a shutter. The subjects are limitless. They range from fragile flowers to mountain peaks; from quiet pools to thundering waterfalls; from flickering bluejays to lonely eagles; from clownish coneys to giant griz- RESORTS. | is available too. BERLIN, May 8.—Every year sees & greater number of tourists who choose the countryside for sightseeing tours. The charm of the River Dan- ube claims one of the favored tours for its great colored chalk-rock shores. At Beuron, along its shore one comes to the old Benedictine chapter house and high up on the rocks of the Werenwag and Wildenstein stand two fortresses of medieval times. In the quiet, dammed-up waters are reflected the castle and houses of Siegmaringen. A day’s journey brings one to Ulm; & masterpiece of Gothic architecture. The coloring of purple and blue moun- tain peaks, the vegetation of vivid green and the waters of the Danube, make an ideal combination for lovers of the beautiful and picturesque, LIVED ON WRECKS MIAMI, Fla, May 8.—Back in 1887 and 1896, when four and six mast sailing schooners were prominent on the high seas, Seminole Indian tribes of this section of Southern Florida cut their overhead by collecting nearly all of their home needs at the beaches. Ship wrecks would wash ashore lard, copper, nails, baby cribs, coffee, bolts, planking, sugar, salt, tea, cloth, ham, bacon and even wine. But with the improvement in ship construction and the decline in ship wrecks the Semi- noles have given up this “hunt.” STEAMSHIPS.
