FINANCIAL. G2 STOCK RECESSION HELD TEMPORARY Anomaly of Business Gains and Failing Market Cited by Estabrook & Co. Special Dispatch to The Sta: NEW YORK, May 8—Reactionary trends in the stock market are not destined to develop much energy, in the opinion of Estabrook & Co. in their “Review of the Quarter.” The balance of probabilities does not sup- port the views of those who believe and proclaim that the peak of the re- covery movement has been reached. “The anomaly of rising business eombined with falling stock prices ean hardly be long sustained,” states the firm. “It is safe to say that either busi- ness will presently turn down to con- form with the market trend or else THE SUNDAY STAR, WASHINGTON, D. BALTIMORE, Md.,, May 8—Under light to moderate receipts and fairly good demand for broilers, but a rather dull movement on fowl, the former recorded a general increase of about 1 cent a pound during the week, and the latter lost from 1 to 2 cents. The prices changed several times during the period. In broilers, Rocks are selling 24a26, and mixed colors, 23a24, each a cent higher than last week, while Leghorns are steady at 20a22. There was only a dull demand for fowl, and Rocks are about 1 cent lower, selling mostly 20, with a few bringing 21. Mixed colors, at 18a20, are 2 cents lower, and a similar decrease was re- corded by roosters, which are bringing 10a12. Leghorns are steady at 16a18. Young Pekin ducks, the only .kind on the market, are selling, 16a18, a decrease Net Low. The market on both tur- keys and capons is practically over. Egg Prices Decline. A further decrease has taken place in the egg market, which has reached the lowest point of the season. Receipts continued heavy, and prices are ap- proximately 1 cent below last week's quotations. Current receipts are sell- ing, 18!'2a19; large hennery whites, 19'5a20, and medium-sized hennery whites, 19. The week brought about some in- crease in the supply of native and nearby garden truck. Eastern Shore sweet potatoes are bringing 1.40a1.50 bushel for No, 1s and 1.15a1.25 for ungraded stock. Nearby blue kale is selling, 20a30 bushel. Nearby red-tip radishes made their appearance on the market during the week and are selling mostly, lalls bunch, while nearby rhubarb is lower at 3a5 bunch. Nearby spinach is mostly 30a50 bushel, The price trends of most classes of cattle and all sheep and lambs pointed downward in a series of live stock mar- kets that as a rule were dull, according to the local bureaus of the Department of Agriculture. Cattle Receipts Gain. There was slight expansion in local marketings of cattle, but it was weak demand, rather than enlarged re- ceipts, that prompted the loss in prices. Steers finished 25a40 lower than a week ago, and cows lost most- ly 50a75. The meager number of heifers that came to hand sold at weak to Jower rates, but bulls carried through on a firm basis, the only class to escape price penalty. Stead- ily slipping new-crop lamb prices left that class 1.00 or more under quota- tions of a week ago, and slaughter ewes closed fully 50 off. Vealers lost 1.00 during the week. There was no quotable price change in the local hog market after Monday's generally 10 higher trend, and the late trade was on a strong basis. On Thursday the bulk of medium and low grades of steers cleared 9.35 a10.75, good grade offerings in small lots selling up to 11.25. Plain light weights sold on down through the 800 column and a few below 8.00. A part loed of good grade around 975-pound heifers brought 9.50. Ma- Jority of low cutter and cutter grades of cows released at 4.00a5.25, “shelly” kinds occasionally under 4.00. Plain and medium grades crashed at 5.50a 6.50, and good grade individuals sold up to 7.00 or slightly above. Plain and medium bulls cleared at 6.00s 7.25, and good grade butcher bulls sold up to 9.00. Vealers Bring $7 to $10. Good grades of vealers Friday brought 9.50810.00, mostly, plain and medium grades 7.00a9.00 and culls s0ld downward toward 5.00. In hogs, Friday sales were conducted on a steady to strong basis in which good and choice grades of 170a210- pound barrows and gilts brought 10.75a 11.00; practical top, 11.00. Compar- able grades of 220a250-pound were listed at 10.50a10.75, and heavy weights down to 10.00 or below. Good and choice 140a160-pound lignt lights cashed at 10.35a10.70; 120a140-pound slaughter pigs, 9.75810.10, and good packing sows, 8.75a0.20. Stags were quoted from 8.00 downward. Hags from ‘“doubtful” areas are not in- cluded in the prices. Early this week fairly dependable outlet for Spring lambs was found at 15.00a15.50, if of good and choice grades, and in Friday's market com- parable offerings sold 14.50 downward. Other than new crop lambs there was little on offer this week. Odd lots of ‘wooled slaughter ewes sold up to 6.00 early in the week and later from 5.50 downward. Late in the period some shorn ewes carried a bid of 4.00. Grain Market. Closing prices were: Wheat—No. 2, red, Winter, garlicky, spot, domestic, 1.40; May delivery, 1.40; corn, No. 2, yellow, domestic, 1.25; Westerin bill- ing at & premium over this price; cob corn nominal; oats, No. 2, white, domestic, 65a75; No. 3, 664874, except grain on track there is an additional charge of 1!, cents per bushel for storage and elevation on all sales of oats; Rye, No. 2, 1.36a1.41; barley, 96a1.01.
