C—6 =« .S LOWINTS (RO BORDERS Federal Savings Associa- tions Now Located in Territories. Less than four years old, the net- work of Federal savings and loan associations has spread out into the farthest corners of the Unitea States and into its distant territories. Since June, 1933, when Congress authorized their formation, their num- ber has rapidly grown until today the total has reached 1248. The names and locations of these thrift and home-financing institutions plainly in- dicate the variation in the geography, customs and life of the different sec- tions of the country. In Caribou, in the tip of Maine, is the Federal association farthest north- east. In Homestead, Fla., below Miami, is the one farthest southeast. Cutting across to Texas, in Browns- ville, is the association farthest south in the central part of the Nation. On the West Coast San Diego has & group of Federals which are the farthest southwest in the United States. On up the coast one comes to Bellingham, Wash,, the farthest northwest on the mainland in this network. Unit in Alaska, Way up in Juneau there is a Fed- eral association doing its part in the financing of home building in the far-away territory of Alaska. This institution is under the supervision of the eleventh district Federal Home Loan Bank, located in Portland, Oreg. Out in Uncle Sam’s mid-Pacific paradise of Hawaii one finds more of these Federal thrift associations. They are supervised by the twelfth district Federal Home Loan Bank in Los Angeles, Calif. Federal associations are to home financing what national bank: are to commercial financing. They are “the national banks” of the building and loan business. All are local, mutual Shrift institutions, privately officered and managed but subject to Federal supervisior and examination. They are modeled on the basic features of building and loan associations and of mutual savings banks because experi- ence has shown tha. these types of institutions are best fitted to finance home ownership. Colorful Names in Group. Glancing over the long list of cities and towns where these associations are located, the eye finds colorful and pungent names such as these: Andalusia, E1 Dorado, Hope, Piggott, Escondido, Rock Ford, Tupelo, Deer Lodge, Cozad, Tucumcari, Arcanum, Pawhuska, Wewoka, The Dalles, Windsor, Tavares, Toccoa, Nampa, Momence, Loogootee, Oelwein, Wakee- Dey, Cheraw, Tullahoma, Cuero, Quanah, Yoakum, Chehalis, Hazard, Natchitoches, Glen Burnie, Natick and Owosso. These and many more are illustra- tive of the extent of this network. In these communities, financing of the construction, purchase and recondi- tioning of home is fostered and aided. ‘The borrower, as well as the investor or shareholder, has a right to vote and participate in the meetings of these Federal institutions. Borrowers are given mortgage loan contracts that are easily understood, by which they can compute their total obligations month by month, and which encourage them to make as Tapid progress as their means permit toward the attainment of that goal which every home owner cherishes, a debt-free home. The borrower reduces the original principal of his loan with easy monthly payments. He pays interest only on the continually decreasing amount of principal, not on the orig- inal face value of the mortgage. Charters of Institutions. More than half of the Federal insti- tutions were originally chartered as such. Others have been State-char- tered associations which have con- verted their business into Federal as- sociations. While this conversion is | continuing, many associations, retain- ing their State charters, are gradually changing their thrift and lending programs to conform more and more to the pattern set by the Federals. All Federal and many State char- tered associations are members of the Federal Home Loan Bank System, a ministered by the Federal Home Loan Bank Board in Washington. Accounts in all Federal associations are insured up to $5,000 each by the Federal Sav- ings and Loan Insurance Corp. Many Btate-chartered associations also pro- vide insurance for their accounts through the same corporation. CONTROLS SOUND Bound-absorbing plaster with its air pockets that prevent the deflection of sound waves, thus deadening them without excessive reverberation, con- trols the sound within the room. It comes in white and colors, and its finished surface is of. proper hardness to withstand normal wear and tear and redecorating without loss of efficiency. Aocoustical plaster may be used with good effect in bed rooms, nurseries, telephone recesses, recreation rooms, and other sections of the household where sound control is desirable, Cure for Root Aphids. ‘Tobacco stems, if spread around the base of aster and other plants subject to attack of root aphids, will overcome the trouble. —_— Realty Sale in Hillwood. This year, however, you won't have to swelter as extensively as you did in the past, because the manufacturers of air conditioning have been busy plying their trade and have produced a lot of new equip- ment which will make it easier for you to enjoy ideal weather at all times. Advances in design and reduction in size are outstanding features of many of the new conditioners and you will be surprised to see how com- pact & space the new ones can be housed in one little, compact cabinet without the bother of elaborate piping or wiring in the installation. ‘The air conditioners are designed to reduce the humidity or moisture content of the air in the room more than reduce the temperature to such & large extent. A small refrigeration machine extracts heat from the air as it is passed over the cooling coil by the circulating fan and also due to the fact that the surface of the col is quite cold a large amount of water vapor is removed also by con- densation. This water vapor, which ordinarily would have made the room hot and sticky, is then blown out into the outside air, thereby eliminating any need for drain pipes or the like. ‘With machines of this sort it will be possible for modernizers of even mod- fitted into. SATURDAY, tainly the comfort and relaxation which you will be able to switch on this Summer will be well worth the expense, which, by the way, is rela- tively small, Wl SAW a new insulation for homes the other day which looks as though it should not only be & highly efficient method of keeping heat from entering or leaving a house but should also be & pretty inexpensive way to do the job. Many people forget that insulation is just as effective a way of keeping heat from entering a house in the middle of Summer as it is a way of keeping the house warm in Midwin- ter, but nevertheless this is true, and the home modernizer can now prepare his house against the coming onslaught of heat, and know also that his fuel bills will be materially reduced during the Winters to come. This new insulation is made of thin steel sheets which are placed between the joists by means of a unique stapling device. This little tool works like a combination hammer and gun, enabling an installer to place the sheet as he 50 desires, and with a smart rap of the stapler it is held in place with a sturdy steel staple. The installation time is obviously reduced to a consider- able extent through the use of this method of putting the material in place, and you are also assured of a rugged and lasting job. By placing material of this sort be- tween the rafters in the attic of your home you will find that a great deal of the uncomfortable heat which for- merly made your Summers unbearable will be kept out. The steel sheets op> erate under the principle of reflection and their shiny surface will deflect heat back to the outside air instead of letting it filter in and cause unpleasant stuffingss.
