By the Assoclated Press. NEW YORK, April 17.—United States Governments gave leadership to a highly uneven bond market today. In limited dealings many of the Federals moved up 1-32 to 8-32 of a point. Treasuries had a monopoly of the larger gains, the guaranteed groups being only slightly ahead In spite of cross currents corporate liens remained in a narrow orbit, few of the active issues showing changes of a point or more. Some of the Junior rails fell back a little, and a like trend marked a few utility loans which had made good gains earlier in the week. Higher prices were paid for Santa Fe 4s, Chesapeake Corp. 5s, Con- solidated Edison 3!;s, Nickel Plate ¢!2s and Union Pacific 31,s. Lower were Anaconda Copper 4':s, Rock Island General 4s, Columbia Gas & Electric 5s, Erie 5s, Illinois Cen- tral 4%s, International Hydro Electric 6s, Northern Pacific 4s, Remington Rand, 4'4s and Western Union 5s. Foreign obligations also held to nar- row swings. City of Milan 6!,s and some of the South Americans im- proved. ACTIVITY SLACKENS ON WOOL MARKET Slower Movement Is Apparent Both in East and West, Says Commercial Bulletin. By the Associated Press. BOSTON, April 17.—The Commer- eial Bulletin today says: “The market for wool is quieter. The slower movement is apparent both in the East and in the West. Manufacturers evidently are decently well covered against their contract requirements for several months ahead and are buying only to piece out more immediate requirements, which are not large. New contracts in piece goods are slow. “Prices generally are steady in all markets, both here and abroad. ‘There is no cheap wool to be had anywhere. Without the active sup- port of manufacturers’ buying, how- ever, dealers are moving with caution in the matter of further new clip purchases. “Mohair is firm on the basis of the higher levels recently established in the West.” CHICAGO STOCK MARKET CHICAGO. BS the £ssociated Press. NEW YORK, April 17.—Further losses of $2.50 to $4.00 a bale in cotton this week carried the market $5.50 to ‘T' $7.50 & bale under highs for the sea- | son. Weakness in other commodities, | near month liquidation in advance of | Sar first May notice day and prospects for | P a larger acreage were among factors | and domestic | Pm, influencing liquidation. July contracts which had sold nt 14.59 late in March, had eased yes- terday to 13.10 and closed at 13.16, compared with 13.86 a week ago. | Demand was limited principally to | trade price fixing on a scale down. ‘The decline carried new crop positions below the 13-cent mark after they had sold up to within striking distance of 14 cents 10 days earlier. OId crop Positions were easier as a result of the evening-up in May contracts prior to first notice day on April 27. There has been no change in the total of certified stocks at 41,000 bales since cotton was taken up against March contracts. March domestic consumption of 779,302 bales, representing a new monthly record, was about as expected and had little influence. Large mill stocks, which totaled 2,079,862 bales at the end of March, were regarded as reflecting a well-supplied position. Cotton goods markets were less active and somewhat easier, mill demand for spot cotton was limited. foreign CHICAGO PRODUCE. CHICAGO.
