Request Program Played By Natlonal Symphony “Unfinlshed Symphony” Among Numbers Presented by Orchestra at Constitution Hall. Schubert’s BY ALICE E LTRONS of the National Symphony heard again their favorite works from the orchestra’s repertoire Hall. ferent “The Marriage of Figaro. “Voices of Spring,” Tschaikowsky’s«s “Nutcracker Suite” and Wagner's “Tannhauser” overture. This was as fine a selection as could be desired to show the full powers of the orchestra and the manner in which the men acquitted themselves yester- day could not help but awaken a pride in every one that such n organization was a local one. The many fine points which put the seal on artistry were present in abundance and as a sum- ming up, as it were, of the season's work it was decidedly inspiring. The attitude of the public toward the The MUTUAL INSURANC ALBERTR. ‘The program was made up of request numbers, those of dif- classes of composition receiving the highest vote being chosen. By means of this system yesterday’s audience heard the overture to Mozart's Schubert’s “Unfinished Symphony Is VERSMAN, yesterday afternoon at Constitution " Strauss’ waltz, growing orchestra might be classified | into three groups. Two cf these are| major ones comprising the people who | immediately demand absolute finish in performance and those who are so kindly disposed as to a.claim every- thing as perfect. The third group is smaller, made up of those v know that it requires time to attain artistic finish and are willing to allow time for that accomplishment. The minority class vas the winner yesterday, for the orchestra has ful- filled its faith and lived up to its ex THE E pectations. Through the years of its existence the aorchestra has steadily progressed, growing constantly more expert in onc way or another. In these numbers of yesterday’s program, which Dr. Kindler has programmed often before, one has a Lasis of meas- urement of the artistic growth of the organization and one could well be gratified at the advancement that has been made. In the first place, the entire tone of the orchestra has become solidified, as it were, with the raggedness of unequal attack eliminated. With this has come a finer tonal quality which lends itself to any desired interpretive effect with real spontaneity. There is, further, a greater uniformity of facility s0 that increased tempo does not C'sturb the clarity of the ensemble. | Accents and increased or diminished volumes have a meaning and the: auditor’s attention follows eagerly the unfolding of the interpretive idea. One senses that her= is a group of musicians each section of which has developed immeasurably artistically and which | takes a real pride in both solo and ensemble performance because they | have something to express. That Dr. Kindler has been able to accomplish | this in a few short years against many | odds is indeed remarkable. The two first numbers of yesterday's program were especially finely played. The lovely Mozart overture was su- perbly analyzed to the L.inutest detail NING | is making the trip from Kansas City to | STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C while the unsurpassable “Unfinished Symphony” held a haunting depth of sentiment. The gay Strauss waltz | had to be repeated, as well as the “Danse des Mirlitons,” from the “Nut- cracker Suite.” This most satisfying concert, enthusiastically received by the audience, ended with a noble ren- dition of the famous “Tannhauser” overture. _— 73 CLUB TO MEET WEDNESDAY the 73 Club, whose members are the ives of mem- bers elected to the Seventy-third Con- gress, will have as their guest of honor Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt, and as| soloist Mrs. Thomas J. Strickler, who Washington especially to sing for the | luncheon program. Mrs. Strickler was sololst with Dave | Rubinoff’s Orchestra recently and was the featured soloist on the gala pro- gram at Kansas City's President's ball this year. Having studied opera in Europe, she gave concerts . Paris, Budapest, Vienna and other European cities, and is at present a member of | the Civic Opera Co. in Kansas City. While in Washington she will be the guest of Mrs. Richard Duncan, presi= dent of the 73 Club and wife of Rep- resentative Richard Duncan of Mis- souri CONCERT BY BOYS’ BAND Greater Elks Organization Is to Play Friday Evening.
