DAILY SHORT STORY IMPOSED UPON By Carlton James ON JANUARY 12 Robert Yancey left his home in Monteford on a short business trip to Buffalo. Before leaving he prom- ised his wife he'd call her upon reaching the city. By 6 o'clock that night, with the call several hours over- due, Mrs. Yancey became alarmed. Bhe called the ho- tel where her hus- band usually stayed. Mr. Yan- cey had not check- ed in. Fearing the worst, Mrs. Yancey summoned the po- lice. The police checked the rail- road company, learned that Yan- cey's train had arrived on schedule, communicated with Buffalo police, then began a canvass of all hotels. Nothing had been learned by the next morning. But the first mail delivery brought a letter written in Robert Yancey's hand, stating that he had been kidnaped. His abductors were demanding $25,000 ransom money. The money was to be de- livered according to enclosed type- written instructions. Mrs. Yancey collapsed. When she | returned to consciousness the police were there. She begged them not to interfere until the ransom had been paid and her husband was safe in his own home. Inspector Terry Talmage, in charge of the case, acceded to her request. Mrs. Yancey summoned neighbors and asked their help. Willingly the money was subscribed. A bank pro- vided the currency in denominations as set forth in the ransom note. The package was dispatched by & messen- ger to the place designated. Ten for nearly 24 hours the police marked time and Mrs. Yancey sat by her telephone. On the morning of January 15, Robert Yancey returned home. He looked haggard and worn. There was a stubble of beard on his chin. His ger to the place designated. Then & bit worse for wear. Otherwise he was unharmed. * ok K X HAT night Inspector Talmage and two assistants heard the abducted man’s story. “Tell us exactly what happened | from the moment you left the house last Thursday, Mr. Yancey,” Inspector ‘Talmage urged. “Nothing happened until T quit the train at Buffalo. There was a cab- man there, who, now I think of it, was & bit insistent in soliciting my trade. He drove me through the city and out the North end. I was busy studying some papers, so did not discover the mistake in destination at once. When I reminded the driver that we were far from where I wished to go, he pulled in at the curb. “A man stepped into the cab. Be- fore I knew what was up, he had | produced a gun and pressed it against | my ribs, directing me to keep quiet and no harm would befall me. “We then drove through a maze of streets and into a back alley. I was told to get out and descend a pair of steps. I did so, entering a small “Tell us exactly what nappened,” Inspector Talmadge urged. |1y room dimly lighted. Instantly I was fallen upon, bound, gagged and blind- folded. Then I was Jed out of the room, up some stairs and presum= ably back to the cab. “We drove for hours. I fancied we had reached the country. Eventu~ ally the cab stop- ped. I was forced to walk for some distance. Then suddenly my blind- fold was removed and I found my- self in what ap- peared to be a farmhouse kitchen. There were & half- dozen rough look- ing men sitting about. One, a burly chap with a moustache, ex- plained that I had been kidnaped. I ‘was told that a ransom note had been prepared and I was to copy it ver- batim, under penalty of death. “I remonstrated with them and one of them struck me. Seeing how use= less it was, I wrote the note as rected. Then I was searched. Every- thing was taken from my pockets, in- cluding my watch which I prize great- These things were placed in a box and the box locked in a cuf- board. * ok K ok "I STAYED in that kitchen until this morning, when two men came in, explained that the ransom had been paid, blindfolded me again and led me outside. After a long drive I was led into a building, my bonds loosened, and I was left alone. “It was some time before I could get free of the remaining knots. When I finally did so and removed the blind- fold I found myself in & dark room. There was no sound but the ticking of my watch. I groped around, found the box which held my personal effects, opened it, struck a match from the case which was there, saw a door and went out. After a half-hour of walking, I discovered myself to within a few miles of my own home.” Inspector Talmage finished jotting down notes in his book, pocketed it and rose. “Wait here,” he directed one of his assistants, and beckoned to the other one to follow him out- side. “Clancy,” he said when the two were alone, “the whole thing’s cock- eyed. For once the dastardly crime of kidnaping has been imposed upon. Now you follow out these instructions and report to me here as soon as you S Clancy departed. Two hours later he was back. Talmage heard his story, then went in to Yancey. “Mr. Yancey, a policeman has to be smarter than a criminal else he wouldn’t get any place. Maybe that's why I detected the flaw in your fine story. you were near financial ruin and needed money. I've found you didn’t have any real business in Buffalo at all. And I've examined your watch and discovered it to be of standard make. No standard-make watch, Mr. Yancey will run 60 hours without being wound, as apparently yours | must have, if your story is true. Which is why, Mr. Yancey, you're in a spot.” (Copyright, 1937.) D. C. CITIZENS URGED TO MARK ARMY DAY Commissioners Believe Washing- ton Should Be First in Cele- brating April 6. Declaring that Washington should be foremost in celebrating Army day, April 6, the District Commissioners have issued a proclamation calling | upon all citizens to display the United Btates flag at their homes and places of business on that day. | The text of the proclamation, made public today by the Military Order of the World War, in charge of the ob- servance, follows: “Whereas, the Military Order of the World War has, with the indorse- ment of the President of the United States and the co-operation of the Secretary of War, set apart April 6, 1937, for the general observance of Army day throughout the United States; and “Whereas, the Army always has been a symbol of the spirit of the American people, unselfish and loyal in patriotic duty in defending our country and flag, and “Whereas, the Commissioners of the District of Columbia believe that the Nation's Capital should be foremost in celebrating the day. “Now, therefore, we, the Commis- sioners of the District of Columbia, call on all citizens of the District of Columbia in the spirit of the occasion to display the American flag on their places of business and at their homes on April 6, 1937, and to otherwise ap- propriately observe the occasion.” EGGS GREET “THE LAW” Sheriff Receives Wild Reception From Engineering Students. IOWA CITY, Iowa (#).—University of Iowa Law School students, with due regard for legal processes, sent a deputy sheriff armed with a writ of replevin to recover a sign they accused engineering students of filch- ing. “I'm not fooling,” Deputy Sheriff Freston Koser announced at the por- tals of the engineering building, whereupon the students within un- leashed a barrage of rotten eggs. The “law” beat a hasty retreat. HELP MEN. HELP MEN. ADDING MACHINE SALESMAN. _State | experience. reference; wonderful opportu- | nity for right man. Address Box 96-K, Star office. o el s % AUTO .
