Bedtime VStories Discreet Retirement. BY THORNTON W. BURGESS. Confronted with a sure defeat There's honor in a safe retreat —Johnny Chuck. three uncertain people. Two were watching each other. They never took their eyes from one another. The other uncertain state of mind. One was Mrs. Reddy Fox. One was Johnny Chuck. One was Peter Rabbit. “Johnny Chuck really looks danger- ous,” thought Mrs. Reddy. “He al- ways could fight, even when he was a UT on the Green Meadows sat was | watching the two. All were’in a most | back on Johnny Chuck and Peter Rabbit and began to move away. She moved slowly and cautiously, just as Johnny and Peter had seen her move many times before, when she was hunting Mice. She was making an honorable retreat. Johnny Chuck waited until he was sure that she really was leaving. Then he, too, began to move away, heading toward that old house of his for which he had started in the first place. He didn't hurry too fast. He didn't want ‘to give Mrs. Reddy the idea that he was running from her. At first every few steps he would stop and turn for a look at her. He also was making an honorable retreat. As for Peter Rabbit, he kept near Johnny Chuck until he saw that Mrs. Reddy was far enough away. Then suddenly he turned and away he went at top speed, lipperty-lipperty-lip, straight for the dear Old Briar-patch. And he, in turn, was making—well, he was retreating (Copyright, 1937.) CITY BANS PICKETING SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 25 (#).—The City Council unanimously adopted an emergency ordinance yes- terday prohibiting all forms of picket- ing 1in labor disputes. THE EVENING ) o Nature’s Children BY LILLIAN COX ATHEY. HIS is America’s own lark. You must try to see how very cleverly the sweet singer can erect his feather horns and how very interested he is in all that is going on about him. What is to every one who watches the lark a miracle is his way of nose- diving from space to within a few feet of the ground. Just when you close your eyes and shudder, listening fearfully for the impact, the lark has opened his wings and checked the flight so that he makes a perfect landing. Watch the lark against the blue sky, sailing and singing among the clouds. When he comes close enough to earth you can hear his “pit-wit.” The larks love to climb into the air on swift wings, and from this wonderful aerial station broadcast their flight song. As they spread their wings and tail, they sing their joyous song, and when they find they are STAR, WASHINGTON, do so poorly, the lark passes over it and answers quite promptly, “Pseet, pseetit.” In this way you may fihd the nest. 1t is very cleverly built of stems and lined with grass and is located on the brown soil. It is tidy and “pizen neat” and as inconspicuous as it can possibly be constructed. If you ap- proach the nest it is the father, in his fear, who gives the location of the nursery away. The mother all the | time has been sitting quiet and her bright, black eyes watch every move in the grass. | ‘There are five bluish-gray eggs laid | in the cradle, 'and they later yield fuzzy babies with yellow-rimmed mouths. There is little time for father lark to do much galivanting during the days when his babies are demand- ing food. Bird babies eat their own weight in food every 24 hours—at least the satisfied and well-fed ones do. Hundreds of trips must be taken to secure enough food for five chil- dren. Each baby is fed five or six times an hour. The mother is far more fearful about intruders than the father, but both rally to the protection of their children instantly. The downy birthday clothes are re- placed by mottled gray juvenile | plumage, which looks as if it were | D. C., THURSDAY, sprouting from the infant's body. The children are far from handsome at this stage. When they finally leave the nest their clothes match the sur- roundings so well that you could al- most step upon the infants before you see them. They learn to travel, first by hopping, later by walking with the kingly dignity of their parents. Soon they are hunting among the grasses for the food they are so fond of, slid- ing through the tall grasses with the ease of an eel. (Copyright, 1937.)
