SENATOR BYRD FORUM SPEAKER Virginian Will Discuss Gov- ernment Reorganiza- tion Tonight. ENATOR HARRY F. BYRD, Democrat, of Virginia will dis- cuss Government reorganiza- tion during the National Radio Forum tonight over WRC and a coast-to-coast network of other Na- tional Broadcasting Co. stations. ‘The forum, arranged by The Wash- ington Star, will be broadcast from 10:30 to 11 o'clock. Government reorganization is slated to be one of the live issues in the Seventy-fifth Congress. Senator Byrd is one of the leading authorities on the subject in Congress. As chairman of the special Senate Committee on Reorganization, he has had experts at work since last Summer gather- ing data on the present layout of Federal departments and agencies to guide the committee when it meets to determine functions could be co- ordinated in the interest of economy end efficiency. Two other committees have been appointed, one by the House and an- other by President Roosevelt, to join in studying the questions. ICHARD CROOKS, Metropolitan Opera tenor, will be the guest soloist during the Voice concert on ‘WRC at 8:30. Margaret Speaks, so- prano, and a symphony orchestra un- der direction of Alfred Wallenstein also will take part. Crooks and Miss Speaks will sing & duet version of “Life and Death” as the high light of the program. Other gelections include the “Barcarolle,” from Offenbach’s “Tales of Hoffman “There's Something in the Air,” “Small Hotel” and “My Wild Irish Rose.” 'STORM SIGNALS” will be the fif- teenth episode in Helen Hayes' dramatic serial, “Bambi,” on WMAL at 8. The cast will be augmented for this broadcast, with John McIntyre taking the role of a Broadway theat- gical producer. JINE prominent orchestra leaders will be saluted by Horace Heidt's Brigadiers during their program on WJSV at 8. Those to be honored are Benny Goodman, Ben Bernie, Hal Kemp, Rudy Vallee, Ray Noble, Guy Lombardo, Paul Whiteman, Art Hick- man and Herbert Clark. ‘HE Radio Theater presentation on WJSV at 9 will be “The Gilded Lady.” Fred MacMurray and Claud- ette Colbert will have the leading roles. Between the arts Cecil B, De Mille, director of the show, will interview Linton Wells, famous war corre- spondent. AUTHOR DEFINES A GREAT NOVEL Ludwig Lewisohn Addresses; National Forum of Jew- ish Center. The only great novel today is the novel that destroys the novel declared Ludwig Lewisohn, famed author, in an address before the National Forum of the Jewish Community Center last night. Every art or religion must arise out of the death of that which has gone before, he explained. Taking &s his example Thomas Mann, whom he de- clared is the greatest writer of today, he showed how the German author, whose works have been banned by Hitler, kept abreast of literary concep- tion in three great works. After writ- ing a fine naturalistic novel essentially autobiographical of his youth, Mann, perceiving that the naturalistic novel was dead, wrote the “Magic Mountain,” a great metaphysical poem, which, Lewisohn said, was the “Divine Com- edy” of the war era. Today Mann has given expression to his genius in “Joseph and His Brethren” in three published volumes and a fourth in progress. Of the Joseph. novels, Lew- isohn declared they were “incommen- surable because incomparable.” “All great literature tends to re- write the great myths of mankind,” he said. Contemporary writers upon whom he passed judgment included Aldous Huxley, for whom he had considerable praise. Huxley knew when he wrote his last novel that literature was on the verge of a new synthesis or would retrogress, but was unfortunately un- able to conceive the new synthesis, | Lewisohn said. Sinclair Lewis he| mentioned as one who did not even | perceive the situation and whose lack | of change in formula revealed absence of power for inner development. Sigmund Freud he named as the greatest sage of the day. In conclusion the Jewish writer pre- | dicted that 1937 will see either the | emergence of a poet and myth-maker | or the gradual extinction of the Amer- ican novel. -— = South Sea Firm Elects. FLIGHTS TO HAWAII CONSIDERED BY NAVY Twelve Big Airplanes Are to Be .,,.H Bent to Island to Replace Obsolete Craft. Plans for one, or possibly two, mass flights of new Navy patrol flying boats from the United States to Hawall are being considered by the Navy De- partment. ‘Twelve of the big airplanes are to be sent to Honolulu as replacements for obsolete craft now in service in the islands, and, in keeping with the policy inaugurated last year, when six patrol planes made a record flight to the islands, the new ships probably will be flown, rather than dismantled and shipped. It is understood the take-off is planned tentatively for about Janu- ary 20. It has not been decided whether all 12 planes will make the flight together or whether two flights of six each will be sent at different times, Emancipation Document Saved. ‘The emancipation proclamation is in the new Archives Building at Wash- ington.
