'RESIDENTIAL BUILDING EXPECTED TO INCREASE | By the Associated Press NEW YORK, January 11.—Residen- tial construction in 1937 should greatly exceed the estimated total of $800,- 000,000 in 37 States east of the Rocky Mountains for 1936, Fenner & Beane, | | New York Stock Exchange firm, re: wkkk A—15- APPAREL PROFITS ” CLIMB IN YEAR Quality Goods in More De- mand as Buying Power Improves. srecial Dispatch to The Star NEW YORK, January 11.—Due to the broad advance of consumer pure chasing power apparel manufacturers in 1936 recorded the widest profit gamns since the inception of the re. covery movement, according to & new study appearing in Poor’s Industry and Investment Surveys. “The customer, as his income con- tinues to rise, buys quality products in greater quantities and offers less resistance to advancing prices, which will be witnessed in most apparel lines in 1937. At the same time advertis- ing, the industry’s essential avenue of promotional effort, should become increasingly effective. “As processors of raw textiles, most apparel manufacturers experience large inventory profits or losses, de- pending upon the movement of tex= tile prices,” the study states. “At the present stage of the business | cycle conditions are favorable to a further rise in the general commodity | price level, and in some divisions scarcity may force very sharp ad- vances. Of the four principal tex- tile raw materialg, cellulose, the base of most rayon processes, has main- tained a stable price position and should continue to do so. “Those manufacturers of men's shirts and underwear who maintained | their quality reputations will benefit most for currently expanding sales. The silk hosiery division faces a long= term declining trend owing to the increased competition from rayon and mercerized materials. This, however, has been temporarily offset as a re- sult of rising consumer purchasing power. Companies engaged in the processing of fur are particularly well situated to reap the benefit of luxury demand. “Improvement in retailing has been general. The weaker units have been eliminated. Buyers are increasing. The United States Supreme Court's validation of fair trade laws suggests that eventually cut-throat competition | may be eliminated and retail prices may be maintained.
