FINANCIAL. D STORESHES [TRANSAC] December Volume in Fifth District Also Climbs Sharply Over 1935. BY EDWARD C. STONE. Department store sales in Wash- ington in December were 8.1 per cent larger than in December, 1935, which in turn were 12.4 per cent better than in the same month in 1934, the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond reported this noon. ‘The report also revealed that retail sales in the Capital in the full 12 months of 1936 were 9.5 per cent ahead of the high mark set in 1935, when sales were 15.2 per cent better than in 1934. ‘The Washington average gain was below the 11 per cent advance for the whole fifth Reserve district in De- cember and the 15 per cent rise for 453 stores in the entire country. For the year 53 stores in the fifth district made a gain of 10 per cent, with the national average increase in dollar volume business going up 12 per cent. Comparisons With Other Cities. Peoples Drug Sales Up. Net sales of Peoples Drug Stores, Inc., in the full 12 months of 1936 totaled $21,153,239, in comparison with $19,215,675 in the like period in 1935, an increase of $1,937,564 or 10.1 per cent, according to a report from the corporation’s headquarters here. Net sales in December made a good deal better record than the average for the 12 months. Sales totaled ©2,407,393, compared with $2,089,568, a gain of $317,826, or 15.2 per cent, pver December, 1935. The 15 per cent gain in December §s about the same as that reported many other chain stores during the last few days. In fact, it is bet- ter than most of them, although in a few instances increases of 20 and 25 per cent have been reported in the ©inal month of 1936. December business was more favor- able than November, when net sales were 7.7 per cent better than in No- vember, 1935. Bank Parley Topics Listed. Local bankers have received a com- munication from the American Bank- ers’ Association, urging their attend- ance at the regional banking confer- ence at Pittsburgh, January 28 and 29. Some of the subjects which will be discussed, the association announces, are on the need for bankers to coun- el together, bank insurance and crime protection, the banker’s part in build- ing an agricultural community, char- tering of banks, loan administration policy, investment policy, budgetary control, expense control, income from banking services, public relations and banking education, personal loans, F. H. A. mortgages, preserving the asso- ciation between banking and trust business, research on Federal lending agencies, postal savings, costs and methods of operation and in the trust fleld. Housing Boom Seen in 1937. Increasingly serious housing short- @ges, higher rentals and recovery in purchasing power combine to make the 1937 outlook for residential build- ing among the most favorable for eny industry at the present time, says @& survey of 28 industries prepared by Fenner & Beane, New York Stock Ex- change firm. Vacancies in many cities @re less than 3 per cent, to compare with a normal 5 per cent, even in years of large-scale building, the re- port indicates. Rents have already pecovered half of the decline from the boom years of the late 20s. Residential construction this year phould .carry on the momentum in thome building apparent since 1934, end exceed by a wide margin the 800,000,000 volume estimated for 1936, itself a gain of 70 per cent over 1935, the forecast says. 12 Banks Earn Dividends. ‘The 12 Federal Reserve Banks in 1936 had net additions to surplus of $457,000 after paying all dividends to member banks and allowing for re- serves, the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System announced yesterday. The fact that the Reserve Banks had earned their dividends, with some margin to spare, came as a surprise here. Officials had been predicting until recently that the banks would fail for the first time since 1932 to cover their dividend requirements, and their profit and loss statement for the first six months showed them running behind.
