Bedtime Stories Beautiful But Dreadful. BY THORNTON W. BURGBSS 1In fact may very dreadful be. A thing most beautiful to see —Old Mother Nature. HEN jolly, round, bright Mr. 8Sun smiles down from the blue, blue sky after an ice storm there is nothing more beautiful anywhere in all the Great World. No, sir, nothing is or can be more beautiful. It is as if a new world had been created, a world in crystal, glistening, sparkling, flashing, as if millions of diamonds were catch- | © ing the sunbeams and reflecting them in flashes of brilliant colors as you have seen the precious stones in a ring or brooch or necklace do. It is beauty that makes one catch one’s breath. But this beautiful world of spar- kling crystal is as dreadful as it is beautiful. It doesn’t seem as if any- thing so lovely, so wonderful, can be dreadful, but so it is. There is noth- ing through all the year that is more dreaded by the furred and feathered folk of the Green Forest and the Green Meadows, the Old Pasture and the Old Orchard, than an ice storm. To many of them it all too often means hunger, suffering, perhaps death. Little and big suffer alike. You see, 1t is as it would be to you if all your food was in a refrigerator, with the door locked and the key lost. You would know that the food was there, but you wouldn't get it. It is just so with the people of the Green Forest and the Green Meadows during and after an ice storm. They know where the food is, but they cannot get it. This is especialy true of the feathered folk. Among the little people who wear fur are some who do not suffer. They are the thrifty ones—the Squirrel cousins, Whitefoot the Wood Mouse, Paddy the Beaver. Jerry Muskrat, in his snug house in the Smiling Pool, goes and comes at will beneath the ice and can get what he needs to eat. 80 Jerry cares nothing for ice storms or storms of any kind. Buster Bear iz asleep. So is Johnny Chuck. It is the same with Bobby Coon and Jimmy | 8kunk. Happy Jack the Gray Squirrel, thrifty though he is, sometimes suf- | ers, for the acorns and nuts he gath- | ered for the Winter were not stored | 1n a hollow log or hole in a tree, but | were buried singly under leaves or in soft ground. He can get to them easy enough when covered with soft snow, even though it be & couple of feet deep, but when there is a hard, icy crust, Happy Jack may go hungry. Peter Rabbit, Jumper the Hare, Reddy Fox, Lightfoot the Deer and Yowler the Bobcat have no well filled store- houses and an ice storm means great hunger. However, they can go for a longer time without food than can the feathered folk. Over in the Green Forest, where they make their home. Thunderer the Grouse and Mrs. Grouse were hungry and there was nothing to eat. Every- thing was covered with ice. Trees were bent with the weight of it. Limbs bad been broken from some of them. You see, trees suffer also at such a time. “We must do something,” said Thunderer to Mrs. Grouse. “There is nothing here for us to eat, not even buds on the trees, and there won't be right away.” “We might go over to the Old Or- chard,” suggested Mrs. Grouse. “Ap- ple tree buds always are good eating when there is no other food.” “But they are covered with this dreadful ice, just as is everything 1se,” said Thunderer. “Perhaps they are, and perhaps not,” replied Mrs. Grouse. “Jolly, bright Mr. Sun has been shining on them all morning, for those trees are out where he can get at them. Perhaps he has melted the ice from some of them. Come on; let's go.” “But it is broad daylight, my dear. Do you realize that?” protested Thun- derer. “What of it?” snapped Mrs. Grouse somewhat sharply. “If we stay here we will starve if we don't freeze to death, and no possible danger over there can be worse than that. Thunderer hesitated for & minute, and then followed. And 50 it was that a little later that day Farmer Brown's Boy discovered the two QGreen Forest folk pecking at buds in the Old Orchard and was reminded that at such a time even the most independent of the Green Forest folk need help. He straightway put out some grain for those Grouse. (Copyright, 1937:) EXPLOSION KILLS TWO Gas Tank Blast in Pennsylvania Injures 14 Others.
