. HELP AND SITUATIONS. DEADLINE By Volta Torrey. WAS taking an examination when I had my idea about stream- lining. Or, rather I had been gaping at Polly Blaine, who had been star- ing out the win- dow at - Spring. She's like a bud- ding rose herself, with those curly bluish brows and that sprig of a nose. But it was her chin that gave me thoughts. It's as neat as the hood of a 1936 or 1937 car, almost coming to & point, b u t beautifully rounded off. That's what I was thinking while old Prof. Boone paced the platform, hold- ing his watch and barking: “Come, come, young people! You have to think fast in this business.” He point- ed significantly to the notice on the board. ; I wished I knew the text book's gospel by heart, the way I did that bulletin black type. Cowper Blaine, class of 06, editor of the City Daily Chronicle, was offering a reporting job to the journalism student with the highest grades. He was the walrus who, the old-timers said, put the first cow in the U Hall belfry and rated “I was facing Phi Beta Kappa without cracking a | book. And, as a Mendelian fact, he was Polly’s pop. That job he offered looked like my only hope in life. With Jim Perkins, who was almost engaged to Polly, it was a bicycle of & different color. He was the king of the college rag and had already had so much newspaper experience he was sure to make the Chronicle staff any- how. So, of course, he was sailing through the quiz like a fire chief on a lonesome road. It was the first tv\o questions that had me groggy. They were new ones that the sly old pedagogue had rung in since the year before, and hence | weren't in the fraternity files I had devoured in the cram session. * k¥ Xk OR that matter, the whole exam was as slippery as a wet pave- ment. There was one nifty, I remember, | something like this: If two ton trucks | full of TNT being illegally shipped to foreign enemy were to explode out- side the class room during a lecture on combustion, killing 16 persons and in- juring 7, including the college presn- dent, while hurtling a gasoline tunk into the instructor's lap, which of these facts would you consider the big- gest news and put first? That just made my inner cells spin with: If two blue eyes full of that stuff, wrongfully engaged to a fast rival, were to flash on a boy about to flunk, kill all other heart interests and knocking the pins out from under him, how could he get the siren in his arms and simultaneously steer him- gelf into & job on her old man’s paper° “Deadline!” the professor snapped | Just as I was renewing my contempla- tion of Polly’s streamlined chin—and there 1 was facing extermination without even a blindfold. Polly rose like a soft Spring breeze and handed her paper to the profes- gor's assistant, one of those oh-so- smart and deliver-me frails, and Jim Perkins rushed past me toward the answer to & young man's greatest craving. She smiled at him. * Kk X K SNEAKED a last peek at my paper. The answers to the first two ques- tions, covering page 1, were obviously wrong. The rest ought to be right. Then the analogy reared its allur- ing head. I streamlined that vital MEN. HELP _— UTOM ALESMAN. new and_use o O ission and. drawing account. 1000 Bladensburg rd. n.e Mrrouoms'"usiib* C! I knew Jim was probably taking Polly over to the College Inn, to brag, the way he does, and I felt I should be there to horn in. But I sped home, dug out the text and pounded the correct dope on those first two queries into my un- easy brain. A girl waiting and waiting for a fellow to call her up can't feel any worse than I did the next few min- utes, perching on the telephone stool and regretting that I didn’t know more good old prayers. X ¥ x IT RANG at last. And it was the prof's little right-hand woman calling up, just as I had hoped, to tell me that the first sheet on my exami- nation paper was missing. “Is that so?” I ejaculated. I wrote it.” “H'm,” she went. “And I'm sure,” I added with equal truthfulness, “that I know the an- swers to those first two questions.” extermination.’ “I'm sure telephone, probably thinking she'd tripped me up, “suppose you come to the office immediately and write out your answers in my presence.” I just about knocked myself off the stool patting my own back, and I ran, 50 as to have time to drop in at the inn en route. “Jim, old boy,” I said, “the prexy's | looking for you about something or | other. Must be tough to be a campus big shot!” He fell for it like a pole vaulter | hitting the sawdust and I slid into the booth beside Polly. I told her, nat- urally, how smart I was and how I was bamboozling th~ prof. I pranced igto the journalism office | feeling like a sprinter coming down | the homestretch 10 yards ahead of the pack. But the professor was there, as well as the naive assistant, and the air had a January tinge. ok X X HE SAT and watched while I scrib- bled. I'd intended to scratch the cranium and pretend to be having tough going, but I didn't need to make believe. I finished in a cold sweat. He look- ed at the paper, cleared his throat and began: “Who told you?" Honesty pays, I reminded myself, and said, “Nobody.” “Come, come, this is an old stall, this losing of a page of an examina- tion paper.” The way he said “los- ing” wasn't nice to hear either. “This trick was worked on me successfully Jjust once, 30 years ago. Nobody has deceived me since.” Then he blew up, flunking me in the journalism course and hurling Jim Perkins into scholastic glory— which cured me forever of cutting corners. But that same explosion—and this is the big news I would have put first had I learned my lessons bet- ter—made Editor Blaine roar, blew me into & job on the Chronicle after all and finally plopped Polly into my arms. Because my present employer and father-in-law was the guy who got away with that streamlining trick in 1906. (Copyright, 1836, HELP ME (Continued.)
