OLD SETS BLAMED ININTERF ERENCE N. B. C. Researcher Refutes : Charge of Politics in Bad Receptior. E quadrennial tempests raised in presidential years, when op- posing campaign factions raise the cry of “interference” in the Teception of their radio speakers, was cleared up today in a statement bear- ing the signature of C. W. Horn, di- rector of research and development for N.B. C. To sum up the statement, Horn de- elared that most of the so-calied “in- terference” actually results from re- ception on sets which are not as se- Jective as the most modern. Horn said that where the “interference” would not be noticed on programs of musical entertainment, it often at- tracts unusual attention when it oc- curs during & talk in which the listener Is intensely interested. “Listeners, not realizing that the fault is in their own sets, begin to call newspapers,” said Horn. “Rumors be- gin to fly that other stations, moti- vated by political reasons, have at- tempted to drown out the political speaker with deliberate interference. “Radio stations are assigned certain Election Returns Broadcast Schedule | Of The Evening Star The schedule of election re- turns to be broadcast by WMAL direct from The Star follows: 6 p.m. ‘o 6:15—Star broadcast. 6:30 p.m. to 6:45—Star broad- cast. 7:18 p.m, to 7:30—Star broad- cast. 7:40 pm. to 7:50—8tar broad- cast. 8:00 pm. to 10 p.m~Network programs. 10:00 p.m. to 10:30—Star broad- cast. 10:30 pm. to 11:00—Network programs. 11:00 pm. to broadcast. 11:20 p.m.—Star broadcast. 11:30 p.m, until close—Star broadcast, 11:15—8tar definite frequencies by the Federal Communications Commission. They must stay within that frequency and must not allow s variation of more than 50 cycles. Most stations stay within much less than that varistion —it would take s variation of 10,000 cycles to interfere with another sta- tion’s channel.” Information given the Federal Com- munications Commission show there are 30,000,000 radio sets in the United THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. States and about 25 per cent of them are more than five years old. Wl'fl! the political campaign over, the networks plan to settle down to normal operations. More programs were cancelled completely or curtafled than in any previous presi- dentia] election because of the plethors of political broadcasts. The altering of programs for politi- cal speeches did not upset the sta- |, tions nearly as much, however, as the last-minute changing of speakers. In many cases speakers were switched an hour before the broadcast. And who got the blame from the public? Not the stations, or the party strategists who were really responsible, but the newspapers, because the scheduled programs did not list the name of the correct speaker, COL ROSCOE TURNER, holder of numerous aviation speed records, hes signed a contract with N. B. C. to start in its mew serial, “Plying Time.” He expects to join the cast next week . , . N, B.
