Twins Seeing London ‘TEDDY' ROOSEVELT “Uncle Dan” Beard Leads 17th Pilgrimage to Friend’s Grave. BY the Associated Press. NEW YORK, October 24.—An 86- year-old Boy Scout, who once roamed the outdoors with former President Roosevelt, led 5,000 younger Scouts in a pilgrimage to his old friend's grave today For the seventeenth successive year Daniel Carter Beard, national Scout commissioner, headed the annual pro- cession to the cemetery at Oyster Bay, Long Island, to honor the dead “chief Scout citizen.” Behind “Uncle Dan,” in the line of pilgrims from New York, New Jer- sey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and Delaware, were Scouts and Scout leaders in Indian regalia and the buckskin of pioneer woodsmen. With American flags and troop col- ors massed in front of them, the Scouts marched in a single column from Oyster Bay Village to the Roose- velt burial spot, & mile away. In this small town the rough-rid- ing President began the Scouting activity which was to end with his selection as the first honorary vice president of the organization. His first post was a committeemanship in Oyster Bay’s Troop 39 His last was “chief Scout citizen,” a title he held when he died, in 119 In tribute to “T. R.'s” devotion to scouting ideals, the 5,000 men and boys filed past his grave, halted by contingents, and saluted, while a picked Scout of each group laid a wreath on the tomb. Rose petals were tossed to the winds in a memorial ceremony that fol- lowed. The Scouts repeated their oath and laws. Commissioner Beard and another old friend of the former President, the Rev. Dr. T. H. Mac- Kenzie, eulogized briefly. Indian rit- uals were invoked and “taps” were blown. MRS. H. D.
