Gregory, cashier of & May- fleld bank, was chosen Democratic nominee for Congress from the first Kentucky district yesterday to succeed his brother, W. Voris Gregory, who died last Saturday. The selection was made by the District Democratic Committee. Voris Gregory had served four terms in Congress and was re- nominated in August. The district is normally Democratic. judge’s charge remained to be delivered today before a jury of 12 men decided whether Elizabeth Smith was guilty of slaying her new-born, illegitimate son. The prosecution did not demand the death penalty in its closing argument. ‘Willlam Smith, assistant district attor-.| ney, asked a verdict of “some degree of homicide” that would be both “just and merciful.” “Don’t let this defendant walk from this court room free,” Smith urged the jury, “let the world know in your verdict that you were more just and merciful at the same time to her than she was to her own child.” Edward Bianco, defense counsel, asked that the 18-year-old girl be freed to “live as a decent, respectable girl.” He recounted her story that she fled to the roof of a Bronx apartment after delivering the child, unaided, in the bath room of her home, fainted from pain and terror and the baby rolled from her arms to its death in the street. | THE WEATHER | | District of Columbia—Mostly cloudy tonight and tomorrow; little change in temperature; gentle to rnodernte‘ winds, mostly easterly. | Maryland and Virginia—Mostly cloudy * tonight and tomorrow; prob- ably showers in west portion; not much change in temperature.
