AUREL, Md., October 10.—The Millsdale Stable’s Bottle Cap, 2-year-old bay son of Bostonian and Trig, lived up to his repu- tation of being a superior mud runner when he carried 119 pounds over 6 furlongs in 1:12 3-5 to account for the ninth renewal of the Richard John- son Handicap, feature of an eight- race program witnessed by 12,000 fans here today. The Glen Riddle Farm's War Ad- miral, top weight with 124 pounds, was installed favorite on the strength of his sensational effort in the Aber- deen at Havre de Grace, in which he downed Bottle Cap among others. War Admiral flattered his backers for three-eighths by making the pace. but started floundering in the soft footing. Bottle Cap Gets Ahead. N THE meantime Charlie Corbett was bringing Bottle Cap up fast on the inner rail. Slicping through an opening leaving the back lane, Bottle Cap easily drew away from War Admiral to win by a length and & half. War Admiral was & handy winner of the place over the Bomar Stable’s Yellow Tulip—with the Branncastle Farm's Bitter Berry heading the other six starters. It was Bottle Cap's seventh victory in 11 starts this year. The purse of $3,930 brought his season’s earnings to $14,050, while those fans back- ing him took down $10.30 for the usual $2 investment. At the conclusion of the race, Trainef Tony Pelleteri was presented | & silver trophy by Mrs. Richard John- son, wife of the late United States 8enator, in whose memory the event Was run. BY the Associated Press, EW YORK, October 10.—Wal ter A. Carter's 8-to-1 shot, Clodion, atoned for his dis- . appointing showing in the current Jamaica meet by pulling out a two-length victory in the twenty- fourth Remsen Handicap in muddy going today, While the favored Maedic, rated among the ranking 2-year-olds of the season, finished out of the money, Clodlion broke fast, shot into the lead at the quarter and finished in front easily under Johnny Gilbert's urging to take the $3.065 winner's share. F. Ambrose Clark’s Night Bud closed with a great rally on the outside to steal & photo-finish decision over Mrs, E. V. Mar’s Dogaway for the place. Night Bud paid 5 to 1 for place, and Dogway 3-5 for show. Pulls Away in Stretch. (CLODION, winner at the recent Belmont meet in brilliant time, had failed to show to advantage at Jamaica until today. Gilbert got him away fast and shot him into a length lead before the fleld hit the stretch, where he drew still farther away. Maedic, second largest 2-year-old money winger of the season, was un- able to keep up and never threatened, finishing four lengths out of the show position, despite the 4-5 price on him. Eli Yale stayed closest to Maedic in | the early going, but soon gave over | to Dogaway and Julit W. (BEST BET—MUST BE, FIFTH RACE) FIRST RACE—UVALDE, PRET- TY PAL, MR. DUNCANNON. UVALDE, a gelded son of Princé Pal, has had some promis- ing efforts this year, but still re- mains among the maidens. Meets & field of his own kind in the opening race tomorrow and a re- Ppeater of his recent race at Laurel, when he finished third to Betty's Buddy and Romney Royal, will be good enough to win. PRETTY PAL, from the H. P. Metcalf barn, is well suited. SECOND RACE—ST. FRANCIS, SPINACH, AMAGANSETT. ST. FRANCIS, one of the most honest and consistent jumpers in training, showed he liked the Laurel course the other day by whipping an ordina band of leppers easily. He picks up 3 pounds here and faces keener competition, but still has an edge. SPINACH was the victim of a poorly judged ride in the same race and should improve under more competent handling. AMA- GANSETT should down the others, THIRD RACE — TEDDY HAS- LAM, SOME GOOD, SANI)- STONE. ‘TEDDY HASLAM was in a lot of trouble when Greystreak, Flavor, elc, licked him at Havre De Grace, but we believe he has a splendid chance on reversing the tables at good odds. In the Havre effort he was away in a tangle and didn't get clear until well into the stretch. SOME GOOD is as good as ever, despite his recent poor race. FOURTH RACE —LOVELY DAY, HARRY'S DREAM, TOOTH- PICK, One of the cheapest horses in the C. V. Whitney barn is LOVE- LY DAY, a 2-year-old daughter of St. Germans. However, this miss came to her own recently at Havre De Grace and showed a winning performance, although she was beaten by Vivola, Miss Adeline and Exhort. She was last coming out of the gate and in seventh posi- tion at the half, and only a tre- mendous burst of speed carried her so close up. It is just a mat- ter whether she breaks alertly. HARRY'S DREAM may down TOOTHPICK. PIFTH RACE — MUST BE, PRINCESS GLADYS, SPUR FLOWER. MUST BE, a gelding that han- dled himself in fine style against Chaser, Silent Shot and Cantine Lass Friday, figures as the best plsy of the day. In his previous race he finished second to Zay, with Co- equal, Brown Feathers and Chat- moss in back of him. Monday he is dropped in with comparative plugs and should never be headed. PRINCESS GLADYS may defeat SPUR FLOWER. SIXTH RACE — TOP DOG, SHANSI, COEQUAL. With the distance just right for him, we believe TOP DOG, a star in the Mrs. E. Denemark stable, will suddenly find his racing legs in this test. This feliow has al- ways possessed a lot of class, but was badly suited in his recent sprint tests. SHANSI is a greatly improved animal and figures as a tough one to down. COEQUAL is apparently back in good form, SEVENTH RACE — FLAG OF WAR, MR. BUN, NAVAL CADET. There are few more consistent platers than FLAG OF WAR, a 4-year-old gelded spn of American Flag. After winning several races in a row, he continued his splen- did work by finishing second to Masked Queen the other day. In a good spot and figures much the best. MR. BUN may hold NAVAL CADET safe. EIGHTH RACE — PEEDEEQUE, SPARTAN LADY, INDIAN NEWS. PEEDEEQUE has either gone back so far that he should be re- tired or there has been something screwy about his races. Despite his poor showings in Maryland I am forced to call him the winner over the tripe in the eighth, SPARTAN LADY is unreliable, but may best the equally as moody INDIAN NEWS Racing Selections LAUREL (Fast), BY FEED BOX. 1—Uvalde, Pretty Pal, Little Ban- ner, 2—Amagansett, gle King. 3—Acautaw, Scudder, Masked Gal. 4—Lovely Day, Harry's Dream, Toothpick.
