He bought the newspaper a couple of months ago and changed its name from the Lyman Ledger to the Sena- tor. And now the Senator speaks for him. Fight Ties Norris Down. Senator Norris at one time was ex- pected to go into a number of other States to speak for President Roose- velt, Among them West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Kansas. It looks now as though he would have plenty to keep him busy campaigning right here in Nebraska. He may not ‘gel outside of the State. The New Dealers are sending a raft of speakers into the State to campaign for Norris, and some of his Progressive D. C, the Republicans,; the Eemtuckisn un- dertook to say a goad word for Norris. Before he gould get the words out of his mouth, the Carpenter Democrats in the sudience let out a roar of boos. They kept up the demonstra- tion, and Barkley finally had to let the Norris indorsement go, saying he guessed he would let:the Domocrats of Nebraska decide the senatorial question. { It is rm that: Arthur Mullen, former atic national ' com- mitteeman, attarney for a lot of big interests that Norri§ has attacked, is coming here witi the President and that he also is to be put into the fight 10 help re-elect Noiris. Surely politics makes strange bed fellow: Norris and Mullen have been political enemies for years. Mullen was one of those lawyer members of the Democratic National Commitiee who THURSDAY, OCTOBER 8, 1836. Tushed 'to- Washington after Presi- dent Roosevelt’s inauguration to open law. offices in the Capital Norris protested bitterly: in the Benate against such goings on, and the up* roar was so great that Mullen had to resign. ‘The talk here is that Mullen is to be put back into a place of power in the Democratic set-up. It will not do to underestimate the strength which Norris undoubtedly has with the voters in Nebrasi particularly the German-Americar: about 200,000 strong. There are those who believe he will squeeze through to victory again. His Re- publican opponent, however, good campaigner snd well liked in many quarters, In 1934, the hey- | day of New Deal strength, Simmons only lost to Senator Burke, who then had the bilessings of President Roose- | velt, by $3,000 votes in a total of | 542,000 chst, 01d Gold Coin Spins Yarn. i Wrapped in parchment, a gold coin ‘was picked up at Shell Bay, Scotland, by John Burns, 17, of East Wemyee. Carpenter went into the primaries and in a three-cornered race he won the nomination, much to the surprise and disgust of many of the Democrats. Quigley. who had announced that he would withdraw, {f nominated. in favor of Norris, could not withdraw. He was out of the window, I this primary, Carpenter rolled up about 58.000 votes, and Quiggly was about 9.000 behind him. The third candidate, Emil Placik, trailed. Im- mediately the New Deal Democrats started putting the heat on Carpen- ter. Some of the most prominent, among them Senator Burke, who has not been so New Dealish of late, declared they would not support the Democratic nominee. Finally the Democratic State Convention was held. It tried to throw Carpenter out of the party by voting an indorse- ment for Norris for Senator. The story, as told by some of Carpenter’s friends, was that the resolution of indorsement was withheld from the eonvention until most of the Demo- crats had left the hall and then put through with only a corporal's guard on hand. Carpenter Wires Roosevelt. That, however, has not stopped Carpenter. While Norris was waiting until a committee working for him had gathered the necessary petitions to put him on the ballot as inde- pendent, Carpenter sent a telegram | to President Roosevelt asking if he would support Carpenter for the Senate in case Norris did not agree to run as an independeni. At that time Norris was off in the Wisconsin woods on a vacation and had declined to say whether he would be a candi- date or not—although, nearly every one expected him tt say “yes” when the time came. Later on, Carpenter was in Washington and went to the White House. He asked the Presi- | dent if the telegram had ever been delivered to him—for it had never been answered. The President told Carpenter that he did get the tele- | gram, but thought it better not m‘ Teply. It is reported here that Carpenter was told he had not & chance to win, and that efforts of one kind or another were made to get him to #ay he would withdraw. If any in- ducements were offered him, he turned them down and came back to Nebraska. “nd now Carpenter and his friends Insist there will be no withdrawal. ‘This means a division in the solid Democratic vote, which the New Dealers had planned to hand to Norris, who was 100 per cent plus for Roose- velt in 1932 and still is. If Carpenter can poll the 58,000 votes on November 3. which he polled in the primary, it may be disastrous for Norris and mean a victory for Simmons, the Re- publican. For the votes that Care penter gets will all come out of the potential Norris strength. The chances are Carpenter will get 75,- 000 votes or more, perhaps 90,000. # 4 Carpenter's friends insist he will get 5 i E 4 i & great many more than 90,000, that 5 . 5 he even stands a chance of winning the election. But every one else says that a Carpenter victory is an im- possibility. G. 0. P. Strays Corralled. In the past, Norris has always run As 2 Republican and with the G. O. P. nomination. He has had a big follow- ing in the State, and the last time he ran, in 1930, he defeated the late Sen- ator Gilbert M. Hichcock by 65,000 votes. This year he has a Republican opponent—and a Democratic oppo- nent. He has support from Repub- Yeans, but so has Simmons, who is widely known throughout the State. Republican party lines are more closely drawn this year, and many of those who strayed to the Democratic side of the fence are back in the G. O. P. fold. Even with Carpenter out of the race, Simmons would give Norris a good battle. It becomes clear, therefore, that Norris has some GET YOUR ENTRY BLANKS HERE, ASK SALESMEN ABOUT CONTEST Seven Important Reasons Why You Should Buy Your Radio at Woodward & Lothrop .
