Chesapeake convertible 5s of 1947 and the 5s of 1944 both scored ad- vances of around 8 points to new tops. Buying was prompted by the plan of the Chesapeake & Ohio Rail- road to pay a $1 cash extra and $2 in new preference stock on the com- mon, more than 3,000,000 shares of which is held by Chesapeake Corp. Alleghany stamped 5s of 1950 and the 88 Of 1949 were up a point or so. Gains of about 1 to 2 or more points | were scored by Allis Chalmers 4s,| American & Foreign Power 5s and Penn Dixie Cement 6s. General Motors cars ‘and trucks to consumers in the United States totaled 85,201 in September, the best for that month since 1929, the corporation re- ported today. Sales to consumers in the United States for September compared with 133,804 in August and 86,547 in Sep- tember & year ago. 3 Sales to consumers for the first nine months of 1936 totaled 1346915 a record high, and compared with 951,- 373 for the same nine months of 1935. September sales to dealers in the United States and Osnada, together with shipments overseas, totaled 19,- 268, compared with 30,152 in Seplem- ber a year ago. In September last year the sales total included some new model cars. Sales in August totaled 121,943; Sales for the first nine months totaled 1,516,092, the third - highest for the period on record, and com- pared with 1,220,182 for the same nine months of 1935. Sales to dealers in the United States in September totaled 4,669, compared with 22,986 in September & year ago. ‘The decline compared with a year ago was attributable to factory shut-downs for change-over to new models. Sales in August were 99,775. Sales for the first nine months to dealers in the United States totaled 1.260.15¢, the third highest for the period on record, and compared with /975,329 for the corresponding period last year. CLEVELAND, October 8.—The board of directors of the Chesapeake & Ohilo Rallroad has approved a pro= posal to amend the company’s charter to authorize the issuance of a new limited preference stock from time to time, The new preferred stock would be limited to an “aggregate amoubt which shall not exceed 40 per cebt of the company's outstanding stoek and surplus, including the preferenge stock so0 issued.” W. J.
