NEW YORK, October 8. —Engineering construction awards for the week ended last Tuesday totaled $48,334,000, against $44,700,000 for the corresponding pe- riod last year, and were 8 per cent higher than the average week to date, Engineering News - Record reported today. The total, somewhat smaller than in the three preceding weeks, was made up of $18,570,000 private awards and $29,764,000 of public projects. | For the 1935 period private was | $19,395,000 and public $25,305,000. T0 BAGDAD SLOW for Lost Time on World Dash. BY LEO KIERAN. By Radio to The Star. BAGDAD, Iraq, October 8.—With exasperating sluggishness, a four- motored Imperial Airways biplane brought me here last night on the 876-mile flight from Altnndnl.. Egypt. The flight began before dawn | and ended after dark. The cabin was cool and comfortable, however, and, but for my desire to make this trip around the world in the shortest time possible, it would have been an ideal flight in this modern version of an Arablan magic carpet with the Tigris and Euphrates in the Eastern horizon. Meanwhile, assurance that the time lost will be made up, and that I will be able to catch the China Clipper at Manila, leaves the situation not with- out recompense. My fellow passen- gers, mostly British officials returning from the colonies, were most sym- pathetic over my first setback today | at Gaza, Palestine, where brake trouble caused a delay of two hours. Our plane cruises at about 100 miles an hour. The weather is hot and | there is no headwind. We flew high over Bethlehem, the birthplace of christianity, Jerusalem, Transjor- dania, the Dead Sea and Jericho to a long pumping station, where it was insufferably hot, for fuel and then to Rutbahwells for lunch. It seems strange to see pilots dressed in full uniforms but wearing shorts. EXPENSE ACCOUNT $786. Plane Fare From Brindisi to Bagdad 1s $212. Ekin’s two rivals, Dorothy Kilgallen of the New York Evening Jouraal and International News Service and Leo Kieran of the New York Times and North American Newspaper Alli- ance, were about 4,000 miles behind him. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, October 8.—A further gain appeared in the record »f kank clearings for the latest period. The amount for 22 leading cities in the United States, as reported to Dun & Bradstreet, for the week ended | Wednesday, October 7, was $6,343,- 693,000, against $5,025,028,000 a year ago, a rise of 26.2 per cent. ‘This constrasted with a decline of 13.3 per cent a week earlier. The increase during the past week was due, in part, to the heavy settlements incident to the first of the month. These were included a week earlier in 1935. At New York City clearings totaled | $4,072,477,000, an increase of 257 per cent over the $3,238,625,000 recorded The aggregate at outside centers was $2,- 271,216,000, a percentage increase of 27.1 over the amount in the similar 1935 week. Large industrial centers, particu- larly Detroit, Pittsburgh, Chicago, Baltimore, Cleveland, Buffalo and Philadelphia, reported the heaviest gains. These were followed closely by other important cities where the ad- vantage over the 1935 comparatives ranged from 1 to 30 per cent. Two small declines were noted, one at New Orleans and the other at Minne- apolis. Total bank clearings rose $795,908.- 000 over the amount for the previous | week. Between the same compara- | tive weeks in 1935 there was a de- | crease of $1,375,624,000. Figures at leading cities, together with percentage gains and decreases, follow, also, daily average bank clear- | ings for July, August, September and October to date: \In thoussnds of Jotiars.) Boston Philadelphia Buflalo The association, composed of north- | ern cotton manufacturers, also heard its new 44-year-old president, Russell T. Fisher, declare the administration | sought through the soil conservation | Beiroit act to “secure similar results” to the invalidated agricultural adjustment act. Its retiring president, Prank I. Neild, head of a New Bedford textile firm, re- quested “flood control” of cotton im- portations. He charged “goods made on the coolie wage scale of Japan can under- | sell goods made on the New Bedford | wage scale in any market in the world.” Point to Larger Importations. In adopting the resolutions against | Japanese importations, the association | asserted “imports of cotton goods hlve pyramided from an annual average of | | approximately 1,000,000 square yards prior to 1933 at a rate which, if main- tained, will amount to 100,000,000 | square yards for 1936.” The resolution also stated ‘“these imports, competing with domestic products and amounting in some instances to as much as 50 per cent of domestic requirements in the ranges in which they compete., are marketed at prices substantially below the American level.” The resolution charged that “Japa- nese goods, which are produced on a wage basis of a few cents a day, dis- place yard for yard the products of | the American textile worker.” The resolution opposing the revenue act provisions asserted the measure ‘was “a regulatory measure as well as a ' tax proposal, pumnz an arbitrary | penalty on reserves.” Soil Conservation Act Hit. In charging the administration sought to substitute the soil conserva- tion act for the invalidated A. A. A., Fisher declared: “It is much too soon to comment on the effectiveness of the soil conserva- tion act or whether the anticipated control of production through this plan can be effected.” Later last night Fisher asserted: | “At present business is better. A backlog of unfilled orders is gradually being built up. Cloth for spot deliv- ery is relatively scarce. Prices, how- ever, have not moved up correspond- | ingly. Profits are still small.” LONDON BANK REPORT. LONDON. October & (#.—Th RGO, Ootobtr 8 U The Bask of | October onfln thaunmu’ul pound: — 1a1| "l%"l‘xmw‘:p%t%n oF ine bank’s reserve £o 30,80 last week.
