MONDAY, Winning (Da! ine. vid )m:.l‘n_o Manufacturing a Trick. | § T WAS one of those tense situa- | tions, with both sides vulnerable snd well advanced on acore. Practically all the high cards were divided between the North and East hands. The East player, en- deavoring to make things difficult for South, overbid the game in making a semi-shutout rebid of three clubs. South defended with three hearts, which East gleefully doubled. How- ever, he had to defend very carefully to defeat the contract one trick. East, dealer. Both sides vulnerable. Both sides 60 on score. West's opening lead of a club was won by dummy’s ace and the king of 'diamonds played. East, after taking the ace, underled the ace of spades, but declared jumped right up with the king. The lead of a club was won by East, |and after cashing his ace of spades, he forced dummy's ten of hearts with his high club,’ West discarding a spade. Declarer now laid down the ace of | hearts and followed with the queen and jack of diamonds, on which he discarded his two remaining spades, East trumping the jack with the king of trumps. At this point, East, with four tricks in, realized that he would have to manufacture a trick in his partner’s CLUB ALUMINUM “WATERLESS” COOKWARE cLus ALUMINUM *2 A MONTH BUYS THIS 7-PC. South, who was down to noth- ing but trumps, had to ruff, and now West threw away his last dismond. Declared now led over to the queen of hearts in dummy, but had nothing to play but a diamond, which West ‘was able to over-ruff for the setting trick. 1t is worthy of note that, had East carelessly played a spade instead of a club at the crucial point, the con- tract would have been made, since now West would now have been able to discard his last diamond and hence could not have over-ruffed. By the Associated Press. RICHMOND, September 28.—Motor Vehicle Director John Q. Rhodes, jr., said today that county irial justices and Police Court judges had suspended automobile drivers’ permits upon con- viction of their first offense of reck- less driving in 77 cases since the new law became effective June 19. The legislation, enacted by the last General Assembly, gives these courts authority to suspend permits up to a period of six months. Mr. Rhodes sald he found suspensions ranged from 10 days to 6 months, with total suspensions of 5,805 days from June 19 through September 24. He said it was “significant” that 19 motorists had their permits suspended for the maximum period of six months. Twenty-one permits were revoked for 1 month and 13 for 2 months. Others were for lesser periods. ‘The average days of suspension of the permit rose from 10 in June to 83 in July, and the average for both August and September was 76 days. Mr. Rhodes said the new law was improving highway conditions and had become an integral part of the division’s campaign to “kesp the reck- less driver and the accident addict off Virginia highways.” He pointed out that another amend- ment to the motor vehicle ccde this year makes it mandatory upon the division to revoke a permit for a period of ane year upon conviction of a second offense of reckless driving, instead of the third, as originally pro- vided in the code.
