In line with increased earnings by many of the country’s biggest rail- Tohds, the Baltimore & Ohio today reported substantial improvement in August when net railway operating income totaled $3,115696, as com- pared with $2,288,895, or a gain of $826,802 over August, 1935. There was a sharp increase in freight revenues during the month | and the lower passenger fares also were reflected in marked improvement In passenger earnings. Recent Nation- wide business recovery also was pice tured in a good increase in express revenues. Preight revenues in August totaled $12,551,556, against $10,291.450 in Au- gust & year ago, an increase of $2,- 260,106. At the same time passenger revenues crossed the million mark, amounting to $1,025.113, against $900,519 a year ago, or an advance of $124,594, the figures showing that the. lower fares are winning back a goad deal of passenger traffic that had gone elsewhere. - _Railway operating expenses also were higher in August than a year ago, more money being spent for maintenance of way and equipment. Operating expenses for August finally stood at $9,949.167, in comparison with $8,763,548 in the like 1935 period, an increase of $1,185,619 and leaving total net_revenues from operations of $4,- €12,443.
