Steel subsidiary blew in another blast furnace yesterday simultaneously with reports of cleaning up activities’ about its long-idle beehive coke ovens, steps which the steel trade here re- garded as indicative of an impending increase in production. A fresh wave of buying by auto- motive, raflrosd and other industries seeking to escape a $2-a-ton increase effective October 1, and the uncer- tain labor and coal outlook for the second quarter of 1937 have been ex- pected to step up the output, placed at 734 per cent of capacity last week by the Iron Age. The Carnegie-Illinois Steel Corp. blew in the twenty-first of its 38 dis~ trict blast furmaces in the suburban Edgar Thomson mill, the largest num- ber it has operated since 1930. A year 8go 12 were in use. Observers Puzzled. Uniontown reported the H. C. Frick Coal & Coke Co., producer of vir- tually all the coal for the steel core poration, began clearing up several closed mines and beehive coke ovens there. Officials declined to affirm or deny this report. United States Steel companies have not used beehive coke for years, be- cause valuable by-products are, wasted in its “coking.” So this latest step puzzied some ob- servers because the corporation is supposed to have sufficient by-prode ucts plants to supply all of its mills. ‘The huge Clarion, Pa., by-products plant has been using its 1482 ovens for some time, but there is an idle 180-oven plant at Cleveland and a battery of 53 ovens not working at the National Tube Co.’s Lorrain mills, One source advanced the explana- tion that beehive coke ovens can be placed into operation faster and cheaper than the by-product plants. Labor Showdown Awaited. Several other steel company sub- sidiaries have ordered beehive coke recently, paying $3.80 a ton, an in- crease of about 20 cents over the former market. Some of these, how= ever, are understood to be committed to deliver much of their by-product coke to the domestic market. The industry is looking toward April 1 as a likely “zero hour” for a labor move. On that date the United Mine Workers' contracts with coal operators expire, unless a new agreement is reached. President John L. Lewis and Vice President Philip Murray are the guiding figures in the big drive to organize the steel workers into one union. PHILADELPHIA PRODUCE. DrEHILADELPHIA.
