STONE. ‘Wholesale shoe sales in August the fifth Federal reserve district, which includes Washington, were 103.7 per oent lheul of ma July record and Richmond an- nounced todsay. This was the best showing in five big wholesale jump of 526 per cent in August sales over July and 25.5 per cent above August & year ago. Whole- sale hardware sales were 10.5 per cent higher than in July of this year and over 12 per cent larger than in August, 1935. The demand for wholesale groceries in August took an 8-per-cent slump from the July total, but sales.were 4.5 per cent better than in August last year. Drug sales were off 2.5 from the July total this year, but almost B'per cent higher than in August in 1935. All five wholesale lines made an excellent showing in the first eight months of this year, as compared with the like period a year ago. Groceries sales gained 8.4 per cent, dry goods 17.2 per cent, shoes 6.7 per cent, hardware 9.6 per cent and drugs 6.5 per cent. ‘Wholesale stocks on hand at the end of August were higher than in the like period in 1835, but dry goods and shoe stocks were lower than at the end of July this year. The per- centage of August collections to re- ceivables at the beginning of the month was 113 per cent for groceries, 42 for dry goods, 35 for shoes, 44 for hardware and 71 for drugs, today’s seport says. Adams First Vice President. Most of the Washington bankers were heading East today from the San Francisco convention, which con= cluded yesterday with the installa- tion of Tom K. Smith to the presi- dency; Orval W. Adams, first vice president, and Philip A. Benson, sec- ond vice president. Everybody kfinew Tom K. Smith, Bt.
