Gross, extension agronomist of |the Nebraska Agricultural College, asserted yesterday that conditions | brought about by protracted drought | in the Middle West held a threat of | duststorms in 1937 “infinitely worse | than those of the Spring fo 1935.” From observations in his own| tate, Gross said he was convinced that “should the Spring of 1937 be | & dry one, the stage already is set | for duststorms the like of which Nebraska has never witnessed.” Vast Area Bare. “Millions of acres in Nebraska are now bare of vegetation” he said. “Soil on these acres is in a powdery, *blowable condition, and with the freezing and thawing of Winter will | become more s0.” The agronomist said more than haif | of Nebraska’s 10,000,000 corn acres | were unprotected by cover crops or | weeds, and that an additional two o three million acres of land which never was Summer fallowed before was in danger of blowing. “Because of the drought very little water has stored in the soil,” he con- tinued, Urges Seeding. PITTSBURGH, September 18- Philip Murray, chairman of the Steel Workers Organizing Committee, pre- dicted yesterday the United States Ste=1 Corp. will grant a wage increase, but is withholding the announcement as “part of a general scheme of big business to defeat the re-election of President Roosevelt.” The chief lieutenant of union la- | bor's drive to enroll the 451,000 steel wage earners in one organization made his assertion in a 2,000-word reply to B. F. Fairless, president of the United States Steel’s Carnegie- Ilnois Corp. Fairless notified his 90,000 employes last week there would be no wage boost because, he said, earnings and past-due dividends made such a step unwise at this time, Intends to Use Fund. Murray asserted Fairless stated a case of property rights which ignores “human rights” of the workers and pointed out that $11,000,000, set aside by the corporation from $16.000,000 net profits during the first h 1936, is taxable under new Federal laws. SAN FRANCISCO, September 18 — | A woman bank employe nowadays need no longer be merely the banker's sec-‘ retary—she can be the banker—lead- | ers of the Nation's 2,100 bank women asserted today. A limitless future for them was fore- seen by Miss Susan B. Sturgis, assistant branch manager of the First National Bank of Boston. She is president of | the Association of Bank Women, open- ing a two-day convention today. “It is an odd thing,” she told inter- viewers, “but the question confronting | woman bankers today is not how far | they can go in that psofession, but how far they want to go. “Women are valuable in banks | chiefly for their contacts. For the most party they are not limited in their scope. But most woman bank- ing executives are perfectly content to leave responsibility of a great finan- cial institution to some one else.” Miss Grace 8.
