No. 2.7 1023 1023 1028 PACE MAINTAINE BYRETAIL TRADE Wholesale Volume Reported Well Above Year Ago. Industry Gains. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, September 18.—Un- diminished activity prevailed in all divisions of trade this week, Dun & Bradstreet said today. Retail trade suffered from linger- ing heat in some cities, the report stated, but the return to school and Fall-wear buying generally sustained volume. Wholesale trade held well above last year. The pace of in- dustry accelerated and was accom- panied by increased employment. “With the arrival of post-Labor day,” the agency said, “retail sales established a firm stride which was broken only in a few scattered cities. Heat retarded volume in some cases, but in others merely depressed the flow of Fall and Winter requisites. “The irregularity of Labor day’'s occurrence complicates comparison either with the preceding six-day week or with the corresponding week of the previous year. Indicative of the upward movement,. many cities re- ported in the past five-day week & volume of retail trade equal to that of the preceding week. “In most other cities the decline was less than might have been ex- pected with the loss of one day in six. Regardless of holiday considera- tlons, trade in virtually all centers exceeded comparable 1935 levels. “School reopenings increased demand for all lines of clothing.” All major geographical areas re- ported sales well above the #mpara« tive 1935 period, the review said. In New England the volume was well maintained, in the East sales were 10 per cent ahead and good increases were reported from the Midwest, Northwest, Southwest and Pacific Coast. NEW YORK, September 18.—Heads of Eastern railroads meeting yesterday were reorted to have discussed in- formally steps which might be taken itly by the carriers in a fight for retention of surcharges on freight granted by the Interstate Commerce Commission to tide them over a lean earnings period. It the surcharges are allowed to expire at the end of this year, the rail- roads stand to lose $120,000,000 an- nually in revenue, it was figured. The I C. C. several months ago turned down an application for continuance of certain of the surcharges by pub- lication of supplements to present tariffs, Since then rail groups have been studying methods for new procedure.
