ALCAZAR FORGES HOPE FOR RESCUE Hard - Pressed Defenders Take to Cellars in Six Weeks’ Siege. This is the second of a series of uncensored dispatches om wunder- surface conditions in Spain, written by Walter Duranty, famous foreign correspondent, after traveling for several weeks through the war-torn provinces of Catalonia, Aragon and New Castile. BY WALTER DURANTY. TOULON, France, September 14— from the huge, square, four-towered Alcazar citadel, which dominates To- ledo. Just behind you there is a farm whose bullet-scarred wall reminds you of the range of the Alcazar machine guns. But the citadel is too hard pressed to think of you or even of a battery, a few hundred yards behind to your left, which 1s shelling its 30- foot-thick granite walls. The Alcazar’s 1,700 defenders, with 2,000 women and children, have stood a six-week siege. They have now mostly taken refuge in underground cellars, although brave men among them are ready to repel every assault. Through glasses you can see that the northeastern one of the four high towers has been demolished by Loyalist shells and that the north- western tower is untenable and shaky. Between them the wall has become a | o steep heap of rubble which already could be stormed if the assailants threw hand grenades from below into | the courtyard and then followed up with grenades thrown by men climb- ing up the breach. Planes Bomb Tower. But the Spaniards are historically better at resistance than attack the Loyalists lack grenades or men who know how to use them. So their artillery and bombing planes hammer at the north- western tower, whose downfall will make the breach wider and easier The position of the defenders seems hopeless, and twice the government has offered to allow them to sur- render, with a promise of their lives. But how can they surrender in this conflict that is so merciless to pris- oners? Why not fight on, with the faint hope that Gen. Franco's column can relieve them from Talavera? In the subterranean cellars, as old as the Moorish invaders, there is no | danger from shot or shell, but lights have failed them and food—there is nothing save arms in plenty, water, | courage and that faint hope of rescue. | Bathing Suit’s Doom Forecast By Nudists’ National Leader By rne Associated Press. CHICAGO, September 14.—Dr. Alois Knapp, national nudist leader and director of the Zoro Nature Park at Roselawn, Ind., ventured aprediction today that the bathing suit would go the way of the horsehair sofa and the mustache cup. “Nudism will be practiced on the beaches not many years hence,® he| said. 50,000 Members Reported. “The idea is not so trange when we remember’ that 25 years ago a woman could be arrested for taking off her stockings on the beach. It was only recently that men were allowed to dispense with the tops of their bathing suits.” Dr. Knapp, who said he was a nudist for 20 years, declared the movement had “at least” 50,000 members in the dark vaults and women have gone crazy, screaming day and night. What a hell for them all and their chil- dren! But their stubborn blood will noi yield. Each shell you see from the hillside battering the northwestern tower in & cloud of dust and bricks is a funeral bell, tolling death to those in the Al- cazar. But they will not yield until the breach nas been stormed and & frightful battle in the darkness de- stroys them, without thought of age or sex. Meanwhile, you lie here in the sun- light and thank God for it as you watch the artillery, that modern bat- tering ram. (Cepyright. 1936, by the Norin American Newspaper Alliance, Inc.) The “American Sunbathing Direcs tory,” which Dr. Knapp produced from his desk, listed 84 organizations in 34 States as members of the International Nudist Conference. He said there were additional private groups and groups b not approved by the conference. “Although the present American movement began to develop only as long ago as 1932, nudism is not a modern idea,” Dr. Knapp said. “There ‘was an Adam and Eve Club in America 100 years ago. A religious cult in Germany practiced nudism in the Middle Ages.” Dr. Knapp said the justification for nudism was “health—physical, mental and moral.” “The mental and moral sides of the Waterm More Features— Biggest Values! 7 Different Points—Not just a single point, but a choice . . . which assures getti STANDARD SELF- FILLING TYPE question go together,” he asserted. “True modesty has nothing to conceal. people wore the most clothes. BALTIMORE, September 14,—At- torney General Herbert R. O'Conor this | made public a ruling yesterday that county magistrates do not have the authority to punish for contempt of court. They heat up your house and then allow it to cool off (On and Off, On and Off). They cause fluctuating tempera- tures and cost more than they should to operate. Try it out in your home for ninety days and if it doesn’t suit you in every way, the Shull Heating Corp. will remove it and refund all your money. This is the basis that all Mcllvaine Oil burners have always been sold. It is signifi cant to note that the Mcllvaine Burner is the only automatic heating equipment sold on this basis in Washington and that no Mcllvaine has ever been removed from a Washington home. because of the owner's dissatisfaction. The Mecllvaine, on the other hand, burns constantly with a modulated “throttle flame” and keeps your house at an even temperature, In mild weather the flame is tiny but the colder the weather the larger the flame. Indepen- dent engineers have made exhaustive tests of the two methods and every test shows the “Constant Flame” method is better and cheaper than the “On and Off” method. Use the Best!
