BACKGROUND— Charges of brutality at the Ree form School at Nashville, Tenn., which have been under investiga- tion for several days, were denied by the superintendent, G. Newt Choate yesterday when he termed the institution’s inmates just one happy family. However, the grand fury which studied the case thought differently and urged his ouster. By the Associated Press. NASHVILLE, Tenn., July 2—G. Newt Choate, charging political mo- tives inspired Gov. McAlister's request for his resignation, said today he is “going to quit” as superintendent of the State Boys’ Reform School, target of a sizzling grand jury attack. McAlister sald he demanded Choate’s resignation because of “the revelations in his conduct of the school.” The grand jury reported testimony of witnesses that boys were lashed while they lay “praying and pleading to God for help” and said the insti- tution “is being most inhumanely operated.” Calls Charges False. Charges of brutal beatings were termed “absolutely false” by Choate, who said inmates had been caui lashing each other with straps “so they could lay it on the guards.” While “spankings” were adminis- tered with straps, the superintendent | said they were “just like spanking a | | Farmer Roosevelt Faces Heavy Loss Due to Drought Rain Has Not Drenched Georgia Farm Since Last April. Ry the Associated Press. WARM SPRINGS, Ga. July 2— Pranklin Delano Roosevelt, Georgia farmer, stands to lose “a lot of money” this year because of the drought plague—the worst in this section in years. Prolonged absence of rainfall on the Pine Mountain farming lands of the President has dealt a knockout blow to hopes of productive crops. Rain has not drenched the farm since President Roosevelt paused here April 8 on his return to Washington from a vacation fishing trip off the Florida coast. “It's bad on the farm,” said Otis Moore, superintendent of the Presi- dent’s estate here, pointing to the dried flelds and wilting knee-high corn that should be waving over one's head at this time of year, “I don’t know how it will turn out. The way it looks now we'll be lucky to make one-fifth of a crop. We're going to lose a lot of money.” Pastures for the herd of 125 cattle are browned and lifeless. The sun has stunted the growth of 50 acres of corn—the only crop planted before the dry weather forced & halt. Although no cotton is grown on the President’s farm, Moore said the crop 15 far retarded in this area. “We had hoped to get in sizable crops of soy beans, stock peas, pota- es and tomatoes, among other hings,” Moore said. All hope, however, has not been abandoned by Moore. “We're putting fertilizer around the | corn, but that won't do much good if | it don’t rain. | “That's just our last hope—rain. | child at home” and added they did | And it will have to come within the not average one a year per boy. Asked why he thought the Gov- ernor demanded his resignation, Choate replied: “I can see no motive in anything that's been done except political, be- cause certainly every unit of this in- next two weeks.” UTAH FIRING SQUAD TO EXECUTE SLAYER: FARMER-LABOR STRENGTH URGED Holiday Association De- mands Change in “Our Economic System.” By the Associated Press. ST. PAUL, July 2—The National Farmers’ Holiday Association today urged “a strong Farmer-Labor party” and refused to support “any organiza- tion or political party that does not work for fundamental changes in our economic system.” Resolutions setting forth these ob- jectives, adopted at the national con- vention late last night, culminated s stormy session during which five State ‘unit presidents temporarily bolted the meeting. In an effort to restore harmony, the convention dropped two resolutions— NOTICE: C STREET IS AGAIN A TWO-WAY STREET sentative William Lemke, Union party presidential candidate, and the other pledging aid to a national third party formed by farm and labor elements. The threatened breach developed when the delegates began discussion of indorsement of Lemke’s candidacy. It came to & head in a controversy over voting rights. A compromise was effected by al- lowing each State cne vote, with one additional for each 100 members in its unit, One resolution adopted cited “speci- fic manifestations of Fascism in this country leading us headlong into war” and declared “the only effective way to combat these attacks on our civil liberties is through a strong Farmer- Labor party.” List Fascist Trends., Listed as Pascistic manifestations were “C. Choate, the grand jury said, not only knew of the “terrible and inhu- man treatment,” but was nearby and could hear cries when the boys were being “savagely whipped” with long straps. ‘The jury quoted an inmate as say- ing that during a whipping “he was 50 badly cut across his back that the blood flowing from the gashes” was stopped “by the guard’s putting two handfuls of sulphur on the open wound.” It also reviewed testimony of & former matron that she found “one very small little boy” had been beaten so severely one nii | morning his back “was covered with blood” and stuck to the bed clothing.
