ALASKA AR BASE BOARD I ANED War Department Selects Three Officers to Choose Site Near Fairbanks. By the Associated Press. The War Department yesierday set up a three-man board to choose & suitable site near Fairbanks, Alaska, for an Army Air Corps base. Three officers, Lieut. Col. W. A. Danielson, Quartermaster Corps; Maj. O. G. Trunk of the Air Corps, and Masj. A. L. Parsons of the Medical Corps, were named to select the site. Congress in 1935 approved an air base bill, introduced by Represent- ative Wilcox, Democrat, of Florida, calling for an Alaskan air base and the Air Corps already has made one experimental flight to Fairbanks with heavily-laden bombers. Close on the War Department’s an- fpouncement, Anthony J. Dimond, Congressional Delegate from Valdez, Alaska, predicted the survey would be completed in time so recommenda- tions could be made to the next Con- gress. The Wilcox bill authorized the survey, but did not appropriate funds. “I am confident,” Dimond said, “it will be shown that Alaska is as im- portant as the Hawaiian Islands in our scheme of national defense.” The War Department long has con- sidered the feasibility of establishing an aviation base in the Nation's north- | Traffic o e Convictions RECKLESS DRIVING. Although the high command did not openly acknowledge it, it was generally understood that the mass flight of heavily laden bomb- ers.to Fairbanks, Aiaska, via Edmon= ton, Canada, several years ago, Was made chiefly to study flight conditions in the north with a view to estab- lishing an air corps base at or near Fairbanks. There were accidents, delays and difficulties en route, but in official circles it was said the flight had shown the advisability of an Alaskan base. Appointment of the board follows by but 2 few days an announce- ment by Representative Harlan, Demo- crat, of Ohio, row on a trip to Alaska, that Government agencies were con- sidering establishment of a large naval air base and Air Corps flying- field near Fairbanks. .
