O'HARA, Associated Press Financial Writer. NEW YORK, July 1.—Because of what has happened already and what may eventuate in the next few months the labor situation has become a major topic of discussion throughout the financial sector. Commentators who are well in- formed on the historical side of indus- trial-employe conflicts seem less ap- prehensive than some others over the threatened disturbances in the steel industry. One expresses the view that “a cer- tain amount of labor trouble should be considered one of the phenomena | attending a return to industrial | health, and is not to be viewed V~1lh any great alarm.” And at the same time his analysis casts a few crumbs of comfort to se- | curity holders given to the habit of | the jitters when their companies are | confronted by strikes, The year 1934, he points out, wit-| nessed several upheavals, including the longshoremens strike on the Eastern and Western Coasts and & severe dislocation in the textile in- dustry, but in spite of the widespread fears of industrial losses while the | strikes were in progress the security | markets he found, were not substan- tially affected.” Turn to 1919 Records. To satisfy & ¢ tv as to the action of the steel shares during an | arlier labor crisis some Wall Street | statisticians have turned back to the | records of 1919 That was the year William Z. an'm waged a drive for organization of mill workers under the auspices of the I. W. W. while the agitation was {on, the steels on the Stock Exchange, sagged a little day by day, much as they have been acting since the pres- | ent’situation became a real source of worry to the manufacturers, according to the investigators. The Foster moveme reached its ax late in the Summer or early with the order for a walkout, was obeyed by ted, the and con- | inued generally pward trend | or the brief duration of the strike, Drought Also Studied. The drought situation in th wheat belt 1s somewhat distt |analysts who have been forecasting a teel shares return of prosperity this year for cer- ! {tain of the Northwestern raliroads. | | On the basis of improved loadings of | {iron ore, forest products and miscel- | | laneous freight, it was calculated that roads like Great Northern and North- {ern Pacific stood a good chance of showing increased balances applicable to their stocks. | { This, of course, also took into ac-| count the prospects of good grain | ‘namc. a promise which it is now | thought may have been dimmed some- | what by the long stretch of dryness. It is still quite generally believed lin financial quarters that the two | “northerns” will do better than last| year, but it is also admitted that the | | optimistic predictions mey fall short of fulfillment if the drought is not 51, | relieved soon. | can: amn Equ! 28y 9y 13% 137 1% 8% 13% 137 1% 8% 2 2 - 113% 115 % 25% 26 100% 100% 8% 8% 2 2 Dividend rate in dollars based on Iast quarterly or semi-annual payment. tAccumulated divi bPaid in receivership tAn- st yea in stock. fPlus partial distribution of assets.
