NEW YORK, July 1.—Continuing its better-than seasonal sprint, electric power production in the week ended June 27 moved to another new all- time peak. The Associated Press index of electricity output, with 1929-30 taken as 100, advanced to 111.2 from 110.5 in the previous week, and 98.9 a year | previous. The index is adjusted for seasonal and long-term trend. The range of recent years follows: 1936 1935 1934 1933 | 1112 1055 974 919 - 1020 941 919 802 Actual production, as reported by | 2,029,639,000 kilowatt hours, an in-| crease of 1.2 per cent over production of 2,005243,000 in the previous week | which was also a new high, and an| increase of 14.5 per cent over the out- put of 1,772,138,000 in the same week in 1935. The same set of factors that have operated to keep production at peak levels during the past several weeks | was mainly responsible for the cur- rent showing. These included heavy consumption by steel mills and heavy pumping operations in some sections of the West, where there has been a lack of moisture. All major geographical centers re- ported gains over a year ago. Y., July 1.—Wage dividend checks totaling $1,119,271 were distributed today to 17,499 em- ployes of the Eastman Kodak Co. The payment was voted by the Eastman directors on the basis of last year's dividends on the common stock, which totaled $5.50 a share. The “bonus” is customarily paid to em- ployes when such dividends exceed $3.50 a share. Today's payment was the twenty-fourth since the inaugura- tion of the plan in 1912, and brings the total to more than $35,600,000. The 193¢ payment is approximately two week's pay in the case of em- ployes who have been regularly em- ployed since the beginning of 1930. INVESTING COMPANIES EW YORK. NCIAL. By the Associated Press. | BOSTON, July 1.—The part adver- | tising will play in the future life of the Nation was envisioned today by Bruce Barton of New York in a | speech before the Advertising Fed- | | eration of America. “We have thought of advertising as a tool for selling goods, and it is a powerful tool,” the advertising execu- | tive told delegates to the xederuuansw annual convention. “I ask you to think of it for the future in higher terms: As a power that can be used to raise the stand- ard of living; as a power that can foster understanding between industry jand its customers and workers, be- | tween class and class, between sec- {ton and section in these United | States.” Barton said advertising “ought to rise above the level of the public taste, to lead rather than follow, but | certainly in the last few years it has not.” “Greed for sales has broken down barriers; appeals and claims -that ought er to have been printed or uttered have cast a shadow of sus- picion over the whole institu- D IR B Asserting that industry’s major problem in the future will be public relations, Barton declared industry “is going to be compelled by law and by public opinion to conduct its af- fairs in the open. “Its principal need whil be to know what the American people think, what they want, and what they are going to do.” POWER OUTPUI SOARS.
