DETROIT, June 26—A platform e€alling for reduction of the national debt by “wiping out” $20,000.000,000 of bonds held by bankers as security for credits iscued the Government was projected today by William Lemke, Unlon party presidential candidate, and Father Charles E. Coughlin. Lemke, Father Coughlin and Thomas Charles O'Brien of Boston, the party's candidate for Vice President, an- nounced the “new money plank” after & conference at Royal Oak, Mich. ‘The priest, president of the National Union for Social Justice, said in a press conference that the Union party, which he has indorsed, proposes to re- place all Federal Reserve Bank cur- rency with “United States money” is- sued by Congress. “The bonds the bankers are holding ‘Wwere created with nothing and should be repaid with nothing,” he declared. | “To wipe them out would not be re- | pudiation in a moral sense.” Lemke predicted that he would carry “Ohlo, all of New England, Michigan, most of the Middle West, the extreme West, Pennsylvania, Illinois and Louisi- ana.” Indiana will be “nip and tuck,” he said. C., FRIDAY, JUNE 26, - 1936. STATE POLICE OPEN DRIVE ON SPEEDING Details Make 326 Arrests Since June 1 With Doubled Balti- more Pike Patrols. By a Staff Correspondent of The Star. BALTIMORE, Md., June 26.—Cam- paigning to reduce traffic accidents on the Washington-Baltimore Boule- vard, State police details have made 326 arrests since June 1, a 54 per cent increase over the normal total for such a period, Capt. Edward McK. Johnson announced here today. Convinced that most of the acci- dents on the highway were due to speeding, Johnson doubled the night detail to four men, who patrol Wash- ington-Laurel and Laurel-Baltimore sections in automobiles. During the day six men cover the area on motor cycles. “Eighty per cent of these arrests were speeding cases,” Johnson said, “and since most of the accidents are of the single-car type, we know that fast driving is the greatest contribut- ing factor to traffic injuries and fatali- ties on that boulevard. “We want the public to know that we won't tolerate speeding. We don't want to make a lot of arrests, we want to save lives.” Forty States and eight foreign countries' are represented by the 1,702 students at Duke University.
