Mv the Associated Press. NEW YORK, June 26.—Aided by the stimulus of bonus spending, beth production and distribution tn major lines of business resisted the usual seasonal influences this week and showed little recession of consequence from the previous week. Dup & Brad- street reported today. More generous Fall commitments contributed to the expansion of whole- sale volume, offsetting the light re- orders for Sum.mer goods, while the pace of most heavy industries was maintained or excesded, the agency reported in its weekly 1eview of busi- ness. In the consumer divisions a more definite uptrend was .vident. Electric output, bituminous coal production, steel ingot production and crude ofl output were among the basic lines making a good show of stability, while freight car loadings advanced enough over the previous week to come close to the year's top level the review stated. 3ank clearings were moderately 'ower, Lut the margin over a year ago widen>d. Retail Sales Broaden. Retail distribution broadened despite adverse weather and drought in some sections. With the exception of some lines of women's wear, practically all items shared in the improvement, the report showed. “Spending of the bonus money,” the agency stated, “provided an im- petus to the sales of men's clothing, automobiles, radios and electric re- frigerators, but the bulk of the in- crease was concentrated in regular seasonal lines. Beach apparel and other vacation needs were especially in demand. “The improvement in consumer buy- ing in districts unaffected by the rain and cold was sufficient to lift the total of retail sales 2 to 5 per cent for the week, widening the estimated vol- 12 to 16 per cent over 1935.” Percentage Gains Shown. Percentage gains in geographical divistons follow: per cent for the week and 15 to 18 per cent over 1935; Northwest, 12 to 15 per cent over last year; States, 12 to 15 per cent over a year ago, and Southwestern States, 12 to\ 20 per cent over 1935. The gain in | Pacific Coast States was 12 to 15 per cent. ‘The agency reported industrial activity continued at an even, high level, showing no appreciable change from the previous week, which was at variance with the seasonal trend. Operations for July in cotton muls\ may exceed 95 per cent of single-shift | volume of unfilled orders, the report said, e DEMAND SLACKENS ON WOOL MARKETSJR Failure of Manufacturers to Get Higher Goods Prices Re- flects on Trade.
