Tn the last full month before the Washington Rapid Transit Co. was taken over by the Capital Transit Co., net income continued to improve. The May report filed with the Public Utilities Commission states that net revenues totaled $5,915.82 against $5,572.40, a mod- est gain of $343.42 over May, 1935. Operating reve- nues amounted to $46,204.56, up $5908.09, while operating ex- penses totaled $38,634.64, an in- crease of $5.- $83.82, but not enough to offset the gain in revenues. The net income of $7,669.92 from operations was $324.27 higher than in May, 1935. ° Non-operating income was practi- cally the same as a year ago. De- ductions from gross called for $1,825.77 which was also practically the same as last year, leaving the above stated gain in net income. Net income for the first five months of 1936 was also reported to the com- mission, this figure standing at $27,- 269.31 against $19,745.67 in the like period in 1935, an increase this year of $7,523.64. The financial statement filed with the commission also included a copy of the balance sheet as of May 1, assets and liabilities totalling $1,038,- 318.80 as compared with the lower figure of '$968,292.77 on the same date a year ago. From now on these figures covering the operations of the Six- teenth street busses will be incorpo- rated in the regular Capital Transit Co. reports. Thom on Steamboat Board. Corcoran Thom, president of the American Security & Trust Co., was elected a member of the directorate of the Norfolk & Washington Steam- boat Co., at the board meeting yester- day afternoon. He was named to fill out the unexpired term of the late George L. Starkey, president of the National Bank of Washington, who rendered the steamboat company most valuable service over a period of many years. Mr. Thom is a director in several other important Washington corpo- rations and is one of the best known bankers in the city. The Norfolk & Washington direc- tors also declared the regular semi- annual dividend of 3 per cent, pay- able July 15 to stock of record July 5, President Clarence F. Norment, jr., announced. Pennsy’s Net Income Gains. Details from the May report of the Pennsylvania Railroad show that net railway operating income reached a total of $6,895,912, an increase of $1,526,008 over May 1935. There was a gain of almost $5,000,- 000 in freight revenues and $498,058 in passenger revenues. Operating ex- penses required $24,479,118, an ad- vance of $2,848,230. In the first five months of this year operating revenues amounted to $126,122,457, an increase of $18,- 244,809. Passenger revenues totaled $27,380,846, a gain over last year of $2,472816. At the same time ex- penses increased by over $16,000,000, leaving a net railway operatiing in- come of $28,473,063, an increase of $1,318,106. Five months net in 1935 stood at $27,154,957 and in 1934 at $26,308,469, the trend being steadily upward. Attend Bankers’ Convention. I I. Chorpening, chief national bank examiner, fifth Federal Reserve district, and W. T. Vandoren, vice president and cashier of the Liberty National Bank, left Washington last night for Hot Springs, Va., where they will attend the forty-third an- nual convention of the West Virginia Bankers' Association. Mr. Vandoren will address the convention on the subject of trust departments. Robert V. Fleming, president of the Riggs National Bank and head of the A. B. A, will make the leading ad- dress at the same convention tomor- Tow forenoon. Heavy Motor Travel Seen. George E. Keneipp, manager of the Keystone Automobile Club, reported today that membership gains have been striking during June. In one day recently 104 membership applications were received, he said, the best single day's record since the club was founded here. “These membership gains reveal the steadiness of the local economic situa- tion and also indicate the increasingly heavy volume of travel planned and undertaken by Washington residents,” Mr. Keneipp says. “They provide an accurate and an important index of improving business conditions gen- erally.” Bank Declares Dividend. The Board of Directors of the Na- tional Capital Bank yesterday declared & dividend of $2 per share on the out- standing stock, payable to shareholders on June 30. Definite indication that the New York Stock Exchange will give close study and discussion to the ideas of the Securities and Exchange Commission on broker-dealer segregation, as con- tained in last week’s report to Con- gress, with members being given op- portunity to express their views on the subject, is contained in a letter sent to members by Charles R. Gay, exchange president. Membership on the reorganized Fed- eral Reserve Board was brought to its full strength of seven for the first time yesterday when Chester C. Davis, for- mer agriculture adjustment adminis- trator, was sworn into office for an eight-year term. Capital Transit Stock Rises. Capital Transit stock advanced to 15% on the Washington Stock Ex- change today after closing yesterday at 14%, reaching & new high mark for many months. Potomac Electric Power 5% per cent preferred was in active demand around recent levels. BY VICTOR EUBANK, Associated Press Pinancial Writer. NEW YORK, June 26.—The goinz was a bit smoother for the stock mar- ket today, but rallying speed was lack- ing in most departments. The fact that selling dried up from the opening on tended to promote a little more cheer in the commission houses. The late tone was steady. Transfers were around 800,000 shares. Near the final hour General Motors was the most active of the list at 2 small advance. Chrysler was in de- mand for a point gain. Others up slightly to 1 or more in- cluded Packard, Texas Corp., Standard Oils of New Jersey and California, Gulf States Steel, Bethlehem, Fajardo Sugar, American Crystal Sugar, West- ern Union, Commonwealth & South- ern, Greyhound Corp., Spicer Manu- facturing, Commer: Investment Trust, Montgomery Ward, Sears Roe- buck, Commercial Credit, Schenley. Santa Fe, Southern Pacific, Northern Pacific and Kennecott. U. S. Steel was still a drag on recov- ery, losing about a point. Among others in arrears were American Tele- phone, Consolidated Edison, Douglas Aircraft, U. 8. Smelting, International Nickel and American Tobacco “B.” Official freight loadings for last week, disclosing slightly more than a seasonal gain, failed to stir the rail stocks unduly. Politics evoked heated discussions in the boardrooms, although apparently proving a minor market influence. e NEW YORK COTTON By the Associated Press.
