Avenues of Fashion For the Gentleman HE story goes that Berry Wall, bon vivant cotillion leader, pet ., of the ““400,” and man-about- town and country in the gay 90s, conceived the idea of throwing tradition, and simultaneously the tails of the formal evening coat, to the wind. The resulting dinner jacket was de- vised to supplant the full formality of tails for such occasions as at-home dinners and nights with the boys. Tuxedo, that fashionable colony in the countryside above New York City, was both its place of origination and mcceptance and thus the name. ‘While we're sticklers for the pro- prieties, which dictate that only for- mal tailcoats are correct with the ladies, local conditions are really the criterion by which you should be guided. With the exception of metro- politan centers, dinner jackets or tux- edos are accepted in lieu of tails for formal wear. Of course, you want to make sure that this is the case before you make your appearance with black tie, as the British term it, instead of white tie. An important new note is the use of midnight blue fabrics for evening wear which, under artificial light, ap- pear to be a deeper black than black itself. o o WHERE local practice accepts the A dinner jacket as formal, the sin- gle-breastel model seems best suited. We recommend the more formal ef- fect of the wing-collar and semi-but- terfly tie, with a starch bosom shirt of pique or linen. For informal use, the dinner jacket preferred would be the double-breasted model, in which case the less formal effect of a turn-down starch collar, black club-shaped tie, and pleated or plain bosom informal dress shirt is indicated. . B RCIR 'HE silk opera hat, the kind that 1% collapses and the children love to ‘play with, is much favored for wear *with dinner jackets and, of course, as well with talls. Your choice of hand- kerchief, if you care for a bit of color in the breast pocket, may be deep ‘wine, but the all-white fine linen kind | with hand-embroidered initials is al- ways correct. * ok ok % 'HOICE of walstcoat should likewise be governed by the use to which | 1t is to be put. Either the black or the | white is acceptable. The white, of | course, should be of matching pique | and is preferred to give a more formal [ tone, as is the wing collar, The black | should be of matching fabric or silk grosgrain. In both cases get yourself the backless kind, the straps of which serve to hold the shirt and waistcoat in place. ,WIWANTmrMuourvnwemm- ' test against the use of the derby gor Tormal. or informal wear, With * kX black or midnight blue Homburgs be- ing acceptable, as well as smart for day wear, there is no excuse for the { 7 H J derby. You can do it if you insist, but t'aint right. White or yellow chamois gloves and a silk or crocheted muffler, - preferably hand-initialed, carry out the necessary contrast in accessories. BLAB, meaning to talk (or tattle) trifies or secrets unnecessarily, thoughtlessly or indiscreetly, is neither slang, colloqualism nor Americanism. It is, in fact, not only good, old- fashioned English, but pretty good Danish, German and last, but far from least, Gaelic—compare the Old English, blaberen, the Danish blabre, the German blappern and the Gaelic blabaran, for a stammerer, indicating that the word is probably of imitative origin. Blab has been used by many of our leading classicists, including Chaucer, Milton, Bacon, Shakespeare, Dryden and Tennyson. (Copyright, 1935.) Sonnysayings Our turkey's blizzard was as big as Baby's head. Us has “dibbs” on it! Election Nulls Royal Bids. Invitations to the royal wedding were issued to several personages in Scotland who were non-existent on November 6 as far as their offices are concerned. These were the lord provosts of Edinburgh, Glasgow; Dun- dee, Aberdeen and Perth and their Nature’s Children BY LILLIAN COX ATHEY. White Shark—Carcharodon Carcharias 113 AN-EATERS,” or white sharks, are not abundant, but their goings and com- ings are always front-page news. Man and dwellers of the sea have wholesome respect for these de- mons, whose tempers are fearful and actions worse. Though these creatures are amply able to rout their foes, there is no record that one ever deliberately attacked a man. He does not exactly turn down such a morsel if he gets the chance, for after all he must live up to his name of “man-eater,” but to this great fish, 8 man means nothing more than a mouthful of food. The man-eater is perfectly equipped with long, razor-sharp teeth, with saw- tooth margins. A white shark even 12 feet long will weigh nearly a thou- sand pounds. Now think of colliding with a small shark weighing around 30 pounds. The result would be quite 135 8 bump. You can see, then, what a terrific punch its larger relative | would have, if annoyed by a boat, or | if a man happened to be in his way. ‘Though the tropical and warm-tem- pered seas are his natural habitat, this ranger has been known to become -touched by the wanderlust fever and come as far north as New England. There is even a record of one being seen off the eastern coast of Nova | Scotia. It has also been reported that | two small man-eaters ventured into | the Gulf of Maine. Very likely many | more have roamed about in these waters, but did their “sightseeing” un- noticed. | However, any menace as great as| this man-eater is of sufficient im- | portance to keep us on the lookout, | when there is any possibility of its | presence. At such a time, you need not be concerned about “fleld marks,” to assure yourself that it is a sluggish basking shark or the mackerel shark. What you want to do is to give the | fish all the room he desires. You can find out the interesting details as to his probable identity from a book, | in the safe retreat of your home or library. Shark hunting has not seemed to develop into a popular sport. Perhaps that is why little is known of their family life. It is believed they give birth to their young just as close relatives do. For food they chase large fish, sea turtles, and off the California coast go after the sea lion. A 30-foot shark has been known to swallow a young | sea lion of & hundred pounds and still not appear to be so overfed as to let other morsels escape him. (Copyright, 1935.)
