A—12 #%x FINANCIAL., THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 27, 1935. BANKSTOLAUNGH TRANSACTIONS ON THE NEW YORK STOCK EXCHANGE 1936 YULE SAVINGS 18 Capital Institutions Hope to.Beat This Year’s Mark of $5,250,000. BY ADWARD C. STONE. Eighteen Washington banks will open their 1936 Christmas Savings Clubs next Saturday and seek to beat this year's record of $5250,000 in ¥ subscription totals and also the 1935 membership of 66,000 thrifty sub- scribers. The District Bankers' Associa- tion will again use the co-operative method of adver- tising the clubs ‘which has proved 8o successful in the past and made Washington one of the leading cities in the whole United States in per capita membership, as well as in individual amounts subscribed. Remarkable recovery progress in the Capital during the past year indicates that Washingtonians are better off financially than they were a year ago. Retail trade has bounded forward, postal receipts have mounted steadily, the amount of electricity and gas used has increased in substantial amounts, new insurance written has shown * sharp advances, the number of tele- phones in use and the number of calls has increased, while street car riding has soared to amazing figures above last year's marks. Fred B. Brady Bank clearings have outdistanced all records by the month for the same periods a year ago. Scores of other gains might also be mentioned to show how much more prosperous people are i1 the city now than they were a year ago, these improved con- ditions being certain to be reflected in the new savings clubs. One more important factor is the estimate that the city’s population has iucreased some 16,000 during the year. No won- der the Christmas savings club sup- porters are cheerful over the new club outlook. As usual the Christmas Savings Club information is in charge of the Ad- vertising Committee of the District Bankers’ Association, of which Robert L. Flather of the American Security & Trust Co. is chairman. It is interest- ing to note that the new 1936 clubs‘ are to start on a Government pay day. ‘That means there will be no lack of funds for the first day's enrollments. Brady Is Banking Leader. Fred B. Brady, vice president of the Commerce Trust Co., Kansas City, Mo., who was elected president of the | State bank division of the American | Bankers’ Association at the annual convention, has been a leader in the banking world for many years. He is a past president of the Missouri | Bankers’ Associaticn, and during the | past year was vice president of the | State bank division of the A. B. A. He entered banking right, graduating from college and has devoted his ac- | tivities to that business throughout his career, never having any outside con- nections. Mr. Brady is married, a Democrat | fn politics and makes his home mf Kansas City. Several Washington | bankers met him at New Orleans while | attending the State bank section | Bessions. | C. & P.
