HENRY LATROBE ROOSEVELT, Wife of the Assistant Secretary of the Navy, who with Mrs, Claude A. Swanson, wife of the Secretary of the Navy, will be in the re- ceiving line at the colorful Navy relief ball tomorrow evening at the Willard Hotel. The Hunting Log Chronicles of the Run, the Field, Squires and Thei HE countryside has settled down | down to good hard fox hunting | once more and the crowds of | visitors have been large. Pied- | mont had a fleld of nearly a hundred | when it met at Willisville and it was | a lovely sight to see the riders off down the road and through a ga to the right to draw the Bedford | Fletcher Farm. Here they soon got up a fox and started on a good run. Circling, the fox ran toward the Upperville Horse Show grounds, across the Peach Place to Green Garden, then across the James Buchanan es- tate—jumping into the Upperville Trap, then on to Jock Whitney's Liangollen Farm, across the race course. They spread out—a beautiful sight— and the most thrilling run of the sea- son. Toward the mountain ran the fox until he was finally lost on Llangollen. Winston and Raymond Guest, who were out, said it was the most exciting hunting day they had had for years. Dr. Randolph has one of the best packs of hounds in the country this season and is giving great sport to his large fields. Fairfax Hunt had its best day this season when it met on Government Farm. It drew the woods and went toward Difficult Run, got up a fox that took them down the run on Government Farm toward Waples Mill, & good run of three or four miles, and the big red fox was put to ground. A field o° 20 followers reported a great day. Beside the joint masters, Reed Thomas and E. De Long Bowman, the two whips, Robert B. Phillips and Daniel Fahey, there were Mrs. James McMillan Gibson, Mrs. Henry T. Hert, Mrs. Reed Thomas, Miss Nancy Hanna and Mr. Smith Bowman, r. Almost all hunt clubs’ are going out on Thanksgiving day, which is a big day for hunting in Virginia and Maryland. Middleburg Hunt meets at Foxcroft each year at Thanks- giving. Miss Noland and the Fox- croft girls are hostesses to the entire neighborhood. After hunting they serve a regular banquet, after which a basket ball game is played between the Foxes and Hounds, both teams being made up of Foxcroft girls. On Friday, November 29, the Blue Ridge Hunt holds its annual hunter trials at Farnley, White Post, Va., at 1:30 p.m. Conditions are as follows: Course, of about 1!, miles, provides r Dames. the conditions ordinarily met with in hunting the Blue Ridge country. Ob- stacles, without wings, include post and rail, snake and plank fences, chicken coop, log, barway, stone wall, a jump into a lake at one point and out at another and a small brook, to be umped or waded. Horses will be re- quired to jump downhill and at right or left of & gap, to open and close gate and to pull up and stand quietly. No obstacles will be over 4 feet and light | ticks will not be counted. The course must be taken at fair hunting pace, about 440 yards per minute. Horses will be judged for way of going, man- ners, pace and condition. Conforma- tion will not be considered, except that horses must be hunting sound, the de- cision of the veterinary to govern. | Horses shall be ridden by their owners | or by members of a recognized hunt | club. Class one, 3'and 4 year olds; class two, 5-year-olds and upward. | Three ribbons will be given in each | class and the entry fees will be divided | | among those receiving ribbons.
