STEEL INGOT RAT CLIMBS FURTHER Iron Age Sees ‘“Abundant Evidence” That Consump- tion Is Advancing. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, November 27.—There is “abundant evidence” that actual consumption of steel is advancing, said Iron Age today in its weekly re- view. Ingot production was placed at 56 per cent of capacity, raising the average for November to 54.20 per cent, or the highest for any ‘month since May, 1934. ‘The publication’s scrap steel com- posite has risen from $13 to $13.25 a gross ton, its highest level since the first week in October, 1930. The expected general advance in steel prices has failed to materialize, the summary declared. “The turn-about on finished steel prices comes as a surprise,” it Ggon- tinued. “Rising demand, higher costs of scrap. pig iron and fuel, and finally the recent advances in semi-finished steel—all pointed to a mark-up of finished products as a logical se- quence, “It will be recalled, however, that the actitude of the industry toward the proposed advances has been divided from the first and the more | conservative interests, by reaffirming the issue.” A number of producers, it was | pointed out, have opened books for | first quarter on sheets, tin mill black and various other products at un- changed prices. OUTLOOK BRIGHTER FOR OIL INDUSTRY Cuts in Output, Refinery Runs and Stocks Taken as Hopeful Signs. BY JAMES JAMESON, Associated Press Staff Writer, ‘TULSA, Okla., November 27.—Oil men who believe production should be held level with consumption won a round during the week and the in- dustry’s outlook brightened for the Winter siege. Reductions in crude oil production, refinery runs and stocks and a lower Oklahoma ofl allowable for December, all were taken as signs that the in- dustry is striving to strengthen the price structure. An off-color nake was a 142,000-bar- rel increase in finished gasoline stocks. Even here there was a downward trend, however, as the increase was only one-fourth as large as the prev- ious week. price schedule during Winter's low consumption period remains one of the major goals of the industry. If the usual slump can be avoided, the in- dustry will be in strategic position for a price hike all along the line when the Spring break comes. The Pennsylvania crude market was improved further with another price increase of 15 cents a barrel, Daily Output Drops. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YOREK, November 27.—Al- though shoe output in December will probably be decreased sharply from the unusually high October figure of around 36,000,000 pairs, it is expected that-output for the month will con- tinue to compare favorably with last year. For the full year, 1935, pro- | duction will probably increase to ap- proximately 370,000,000 pairs, which would compare with 357,000,000 pairs in 1934, and the previous record of 361,000,000 pairs attained in 1929, ac- cording to the Standard Statistics Co. of New York. October production of 36,000,000 any year since 1929, and represents a gain of more than 25 per cent over October, 1934, Because of the relatively high rate of output in recent months, the de- cline from 1934 witnessed in the first half has been more than offset, and actual production for the nine months | ended September 30, was 1.4 per cent | greater than the corresponding period a year ago.
