In this period operat- ing revenue totaled $334,060.13, or a gain of $34278.74 over the same month last year. There was also an increase in operating expenses of $13,195.02, leaving a net income from operations. $21,083.66 higher than a year ago. After all other deductions the bus company officials report a total net income for the nine months of $29,- 596.57, as compared with only $5,139.97 at the end of the third quarter last vear, or an increase of $24,456.79 so far in 1935 The improved showing is due to an increase in the number of passengers carried, together with a ciose watch on the cost of operations. The September report revealed operating revenue of $34.136.44. up $4,17696 over September, 1934. Operating expenses and taxes totaled $30,501.22, an increase of $1,186.42, and leaving a net income from opera- tions of $3.635.22, or a gain over the same month a year ago of $2,990.54. Deductions from gross called for $1,781.37, leaving a net income for the month of $1905.04, against a ceficit a year ago of $1,381.88. Trade Statistics Compared. For the first nine months of 1935 ‘wholesale groceries sales in the fifth Federal Reserve district were 6.4 per cent better than last year, hardware sales were up 9.6 per cent and drugs 2 per cent, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond. Dry goods sales were off 15 per cent and shoes 11 per cent in the same period. In September alone hardware sales ‘were up 18.5 per cent, drugs 2.2 per cent, dry goods 2.4 per cent, groceries 4.9 per cent, while shoe sales were off 0.7 per cent, compared with Sep- tember, 1934. Sales in dry goods and hardware were much better than in August, the report adds. During September 96 per cent of the bills due on wholesale groceries were collected, 38 per cent on dry goods, 59 on shoes, 41 on hardware and 65 per cent on drugs, the Rich- mond bank states. In a review of retail trade, the re- port says that 25 per cent of the re- ceivables due Washington department stores were collected during the month. In the first nine months of 1935 stocks in department stores here were turned 3.245 times. Stocks of | goods were 19 per cent higher at the end of September than at the close | of August. As previously noted, retail sales in Washington were 26.4 per cent better fn September than a year ago and up 25.8 per cent in the nine months, both sncreases being ahead of all other | cities in the fifth district, based on figures from 31 department stores. Plans for Security Holders. { How present holders of Barber & Ross, Inc., securities stand under the reorganization move now before the Pistrict Supreme Court for approval, #s stated in article 3 of the proposed plan, which says: “Each creditor will be required to | feancel his present indebtedness, in- eluding the unsecured portion of the claims partially secured, whether it is n bonds, open account or in whatever form evidenced, and accept in lieu thereof 30 per cent of such total in- Hebtedness in the new closed 10-year # per cent bonds, hereinafter des- scribed, and 70 per cent thereof in the | new preferred stock without par value at the rate of one share for each $100 bf indebtedness with authorized divi- #end of $3 per share, non-cumulative, hereinafter, more particularly de- peribed. Any fractional part of said 0 per cent under $50 will be settled for at the rate of 25 per cent thereof In cash. The holders of the present preferred stock to accept one share ®of the new common B stock without par value for each share of the pres- lent preferred stock. “The holders of the present com- mon stock shall accept one share of ihe new ccmmon stock B without par walue for each 10 shares of the com- gmon stock now held by them.” Securities to be dealt with under fhe plan are $622,000 10-year.6'2 per Fent sinking fund gold bonds, accrued Interest on these bonds of $11,792, preferred stock and 50,000 shares of gommon stock. Loan Associations Growing. ‘With 962 Federal savings and loan #ssociations now in operation in 43 {tates, representing total resources of $420,284,745 and the savings of more than 600,000 people, the Federal Home Joan Bank Board today announced Ahat applications for charters are pending for 207 additional Federal mssociations, with resources of $298,- 154,709, of which 204 are existing JBtate-chartered building and loan as- pociations seeking to convert into Fed- eral associations. During September the 758 reporting JFederal savings and loan associations made new mortgage loans to some 3,- P00 home owners in the amount of ‘$9,273,526, of which 35 per cent was Joaned for the refinancing of existing Jmortgages and 65 per cent for new ‘ronstruction, reconditioning and the purchase of homes. Of the Federal associations now ehartered, 377 represent the conver- #ion of established building and loan institutions, formerly under State charter, and 585 are newly organized Federal associations, formed by local business and financial groups. Financial District Gossip. Governors of the 12 Federal Reserve banks have concluded their session Mith the Federal Reserve Board. They reported both business and credit con- ditions much improved and said there meemed to be no reason for any con- trol measures at present. A comprehensive analysis of 44 legal Reserve insurance companies designed for the layman, as well as the financial rommunity and the insurance indus- try, has been published in book form by H. A. Davis, Chicago life insurance mnalyst. The book is known as the #Davis Life Insurance Annual” and the 1935-36 edition contains 400 pages ©f statistical information of United States and Canadian companies. M. R.
