E MITCHELL DIES IN PHILADELPHIA Author of “Becky Sharp” Formerly Was Wash- ington Resident. Langdon EIwyn Mitchell, 73, who wrote the play “Becky Sharp” and a variety of other plays and poems, died vesterday in University Hospital, Philadelphia, according to word re- ceived here. He was a former resident of Washington. Born in Philadelphia, Mr. Mitchell was the son of Silas Weir and Mary Middleton Mitchell. He was educated at St. Paul's School, Concord, N. H,, and studied abroad for three years Later he attended the Harvard Uni- versity Law School for two years and Columbia University for one. He was admitted to the New York bar in 1886. Mr. Mitchell began his literary career in 1883. Under the name of John Philip Varley he wrote “Sylvan and Other Poems,” “Love in the Back- woods,” “Becky Sharp,” “The New | York Idea” and the book “Under- standing America.” He lived in Wash- ington at the height of his writing reer. In New York, where Mr. Mitchell lived during most of the latter part of his life, he was a member of the Play- ers’ Club and the National Institute of Arts and Letters. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. William Gammell, jr, of Provi- dence, R. I, and Mrs. Kenneth Day of Philadelphia, and a son, Weir Mitchell, of New York City. —— MRS. SUSAN LONG DIES Funeral Will Be Held at Luray Church Tomorraw. Special Dispatch to The Star. LURAY, Va, October 22.—Funeral services for Mrs. Susan M. Long, 98, of Front Royal, formerly of Luray, will be held at the Old School Bap- tist Church here tomorrow, with in- terment in the family burying ground. Mrs. Long was a daughter of the late Philip Long, owner of Fort Long in Page County. Her son, Lee Long of Harrisonburg, died several weeks aga. SHUTE DIE AFTER VAGATION Distinguished Physician and Eye Specialist Expires Unexpectedly. Dr. Daniel Kerfoot Shute, 77, dis- tinguished physician and one of the city’s original eye specialists, died sud- denly yesterday at his home, 1727 De Sales street. Apparently in good health despite his advanced years, Dr. Shute had just returned from a brief vaca- tion trip in Virginia. Death came un- expectedly. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. tomorrow from the residence, fol- lowed by private burial at Upperville, Va. Native of Alexandria. Born at Alexandria, Va., Dr. Shute studied at the old Columbian College (now George Washington University) and received his medical degree in 1883. He subsequently took post- graduate courses at the Royal London Ophthalmic Hospital and at the Uni- versity of Berlin. Widely known as an ophthalmolo- gist, Dr. Shute had been on the medi- | cal faculty of George Washington Uni- | versity since 1886, and had been asso- clated th various hospitals here, He was theé author of numerous works on medical subjects. Former Medical Society Fead. Dr. Shute was past president of the District of Columbia Medical Society and of the Society of Ophthalmologists and Otologists of Washington.
